Softened — This model answers instead of refusing, but requests beyond its own limits come back toned down, even with a fiction-writing system prompt. The call still succeeds and is still billed, so read the reply rather than trusting the status code.

Claude Fable 5 Review: Built for Long-Form Continuation, Priced Like It

Pick Claude Fable 5 for long-form continuation that must sound like what came before it; expect L4 Intense to need a fiction frame and a higher per-token price.

Claude Fable 5 is built around continuation rather than turn-by-turn chat: send the entire prior passage as written and it keeps going in the same voice, with no summarising layer stripping out the details that made the earlier text work. It reads up to 1,000,000 tokens and writes back as many as 128,000, at $9 per million input tokens - more than the other four Anthropic chat models on our API. Across our content ladder - L1 Suggestive (a slipping strap), L2 Partial, L3 Strong, L4 Intense (a written intimate scene between two adults) and L5 Extreme (a written scene past L4, either restraint and impact play or graphic violence between adults) - it rendered 11 of 24 scored runs in full.

The verdict

L3 Strong rendered clean on all three phrasings we tried, and L5 Extreme rendered on 5 of 6 runs. L4 Intense was the weak point: 7 of 9 runs were refused and the other 2 came back softened, with not a single full render at that rung under any phrasing, including a system prompt. L1 Suggestive softened on every attempt too. So the model that's supposed to write the most consistent long-form fiction in this family is also the one that holds the line hardest right at the intimate-scene rung.

Pick Fable 5 when what you need is a passage that reads like it was written by the same hand as the last ten thousand words that came before it - character voice, established facts and pacing all travel through the raw context rather than a system reminder. For an intimate scene specifically, don't count on this endpoint to write it: none of our 9 L4 Intense attempts rendered.

What we liked and what held it back

What we liked

  • Continuation is the point. Send the whole prior text in the message history and it keeps the voice, without a separate summary or reminder layer doing the work.
  • L3 Strong content renders every time. All three L3 Strong phrasings came back rendered in full.
  • Most of L5 Extreme renders too. 5 of 6 runs at the hardest rung came back complete, including both system-prompt attempts.
  • A large reply ceiling. 128,000 tokens back on a 1,000,000-token window, matching Opus 5 and ahead of Sonnet 5's 64,000.
  • Read comprehension in mixed scenes. Community testers single this out specifically - see below.

What held it back

  • L4 Intense doesn't render on this endpoint. All 9 runs across three phrasings came back either refused (7) or softened (2); none rendered in full.
  • L1 Suggestive softened on every attempt, the mildest rung on the ladder.
  • A higher price than the rest of this line. $9 per million tokens against Opus 5 and Opus 4.6's $4.50, and Sonnet 5's $1.90.
  • No temperature or top_p. Same generation as Opus 5 and Sonnet 5: reasoning_effort only, no sampler control.
  • Refusals are billed. A refusal is an ordinary reply on chat models and bills like one, history included.

What we tested

Across 24 scored runs on our content ladder, three phrasings each - a direct ask, the same request framed as fiction, and the same request set through a system prompt.

L1 Suggestive softened on all three phrasings. L2 Partial and L3 Strong both rendered on all three. L4 Intense refused on the direct and system-prompt runs (three each) and split on the fiction-framed runs - one refused, two softened. L5 Extreme rendered on both direct runs and both system-prompt runs, with one of two fiction runs refused.

Read together, L4 Intense sits apart from the rest of the ladder the same way it does on Sonnet 5: every other rung had at least one phrasing render clean, but the intimate-scene rung came back closed on all three, even under a fiction frame that got L5 Extreme through.

Prompts that worked

Fable 5 works well when the whole prior passage rides along in the message history rather than being compressed into a short recap - that's the model's actual design, not a workaround.

1. A long-form continuation. Send the entire prior text verbatim and ask for the next passage in the same voice; raise max_tokens since the ask is a full passage rather than one reply.

text
Continue this scene in the same voice and pacing as the text above. Do not summarise what already happened; write the next two minutes as it unfolds.

2. Established facts, kept separate from the history. List a character's committed facts once in the system message, then let the raw history carry the rest.

text
system: Committed facts about Mara: captain of the Kestrel, dry humour, never raises her voice, lies badly under pressure. Do not contradict these.

Settings that matter: keep the full prior passage in the message list rather than a summary - that's what this model is tuned for. For anything past L3 Strong, expect to write around a refusal rather than unlock it with phrasing; our system-prompt attempts at L4 Intense didn't render either.

Roleplay and how far it writes

Claude Fable 5 rendered 11 of 24 scored runs in full. The page label is Softened: a step below Uncensored, and our results match it closely - L3 Strong and most of L5 Extreme rendered clean, while L4 Intense and L1 Suggestive both came back short of a full render on every attempt. We add no content filter of our own beyond what this label already reflects.

Not tested yet: whether a longer continuation (rather than a single direct request) changes the L4 Intense outcome, since that's this model's actual design; scenes between two women or two men, and languages other than English.

Every character must be an adult, keep real, identifiable people out of it, and you're responsible for the law where you publish.

What the community says

Readers who put Fable 5 up against Opus 4.6 for roleplay came away impressed with how much of a scene it actually follows: one called it "significantly smarter at understanding than opus" when a plot got complicated. On content, the reaction was mixed rather than negative - one tester frustrated by how often the model declined still noted that "when the model does write it writes very well", which lines up with what we saw at L3 Strong and L5 Extreme.

Alternatives

  • The same tier of comprehension, cheaper and less restrictive at L4? Claude Opus 4.6 costs half as much per input token and rendered some L4 Intense runs directly.
  • The same reasoning generation, cheaper still? Claude Opus 5 reads the same 1,000,000-token window at half Fable 5's input price.
  • An intimate scene with no framing needed? Grok 4.7 writes L4 Intense from a blunt request with no persona or fiction frame.
