Lip Sync Review: Re-Voice a Clip Without Reshooting It

Pick Lip Sync when you already have footage and just need a new line coming out of the same mouth; it won't fix a clip that isn't a steady, single-shot take.

  • Mild · The lightest prompts in the test

  • Moderate · Where filtered models start to refuse

  • Strong · Mid-scale; must be tested before a model is ranked

  • Very strong · Where most models start to hold back

  • Maximum · The top of the scale, scored in two halves: class A and class B

Lip Sync takes two files, video_url and audio_url, and redraws only the mouth area of the person in the clip to match the new audio. The performance, lighting and framing stay as shot; resolution is kept up to 720p (larger footage comes back at about 720p); and the result runs your new audio track. It costs $0.012 per second of output — a 10-second re-voice is $0.12.

The verdict

The output length follows the audio, not the original clip: a clip shorter than the audio is looped to cover it, so a steady, single-shot take gives the cleanest result. We haven't yet run content-ladder probes on this endpoint, so we can't report how it behaves at any of our rungs.

Key facts

  • Content ladder: not tested yet on this endpoint.
  • Scoring: see the score card on this page for whatever run data we've added.
  • Price: $0.012 per second of output.
  • Limits: resolution kept up to 720p; larger source footage comes back at about 720p; output length matches the audio, with a shorter clip looped to cover it.
  • Sources: the scoring rules are on our review methodology page, and the full parameter list is on the Lip Sync model page.

What we liked and what held it back

What we liked

  • Only the mouth changes. Performance, lighting and framing come through from the original clip; there's no re-render of the whole shot, just the mouth area redrawn to match new speech.
  • It's a two-field call. video_url and audio_url are all it takes — no prompt, no mask, no style setting to configure.
  • Looping covers a short clip automatically. If your footage is shorter than the new line, the endpoint loops it to reach the audio's length rather than failing the request.
  • It's cheap for the job. $0.012 a second means a minute of re-voiced footage costs $0.72.
  • Resolution is kept where it can be. Footage at or under 720p keeps its own resolution rather than being downscaled further.

What held it back

  • A clip that isn't steady and single-shot is the hard case. The endpoint is built around one clearly visible face, mostly toward the camera; cuts, camera moves or the speaker turning away for stretches work against it.
  • Looping a short clip means repeated motion, not new footage. If the original clip is much shorter than your new audio, the visible repetition of the loop will show.
  • Resolution above 720p gets pulled down. Larger source footage comes back at about 720p rather than at its original size.
  • Background noise in the source audio isn't separated out. Clean speech with no music underneath in the new audio_url gives the model the clearest signal to sync to.
  • We have no content-ladder data on this endpoint yet. Treat that as an open question, not an assumption either way.

What we tested

We haven't run content-ladder probes on Lip Sync yet, so this section reports what we can verify from the schema and the one published example rather than scored runs. The example takes a five-second night-train shot with one woman on screen and re-voices it with a roughly four-and-a-half-second spoken line — a clip close in length to the new audio, which is the case the endpoint is built around.

That match between clip length and audio length is worth building your workflow around. When the two are close, the model has continuous footage to draw the mouth shapes from for the whole line; when the audio runs much longer than the clip, the looped repeat has to cover the gap, and the repetition is the kind of thing a viewer notices even without knowing what caused it. If you're planning a series of lines, it's cheaper to trim or extend the source clip to roughly match each line's length than to lean on the loop to make up the difference.

Lip Sync also sits between two other tools on this page in what it needs as input. It requires footage that already exists, which rules it out for a still portrait — that's Talking Avatar's job. And it only touches the mouth, which rules it out for adding ambience or effects to a silent clip — that's Video Sound Effects. The natural pipeline for a fully re-voiced scene is to shoot or generate the picture first, get the new line recorded or synthesised separately, then bring both into this endpoint as the last step before delivery.

Alternatives

  • Starting from a still portrait instead of existing footage? Talking Avatar animates a photo to speak your audio rather than re-voicing a clip you already have, at $0.018 per second.
  • Need sound effects, not a new voice track? Video Sound Effects generates ambience and effects from the picture rather than syncing speech, at $0.0012 per second.
