Qwen Image 2.1 Pro Review: Uncensored Pro-Tier Images and Edits

Pick Qwen Image 2.1 Pro for uncensored text-to-image stills when the picture matters more than the price; for edits and volume, Turbo scores alike for less.

Qwen Image 2.1 Pro is the hosted Pro tier of Alibaba's Qwen Image 2.1, which Alibaba announced as officially live alongside the Turbo API on 9 October 2026. Alibaba's documentation for the model describes it as the Qwen image model that "balances generation quality, inference efficiency, and cost", and lists improved typography, better portrait lighting and finer detail, up to 10 reference images and transparent images. There are no published weights, and Alibaba gives no step count, speed figure or benchmark. SpicyAPI serves it from 14 October 2026 as text-to-image (alibaba/qwen-image-2.1-pro/text-to-image) and edit (alibaba/qwen-image-2.1-pro/edit).

The verdict

On 14 October we ran our standard content test on both endpoints at the default settings: six probe types, three runs each, from L1 Suggestive to both kinds of L5 Extreme. All 36 runs came back exactly as asked. Together with the first round the same day, not one request was refused. Prompt expansion, Alibaba's prompt rewriter, is off by default on SpicyAPI, and we kept it off; on Turbo, the same rewriter toned adult requests down, and we sent just one Pro request with it on.

Pick Pro over Turbo for text-to-image stills where the look of the picture matters: in our blind test its text-to-image image quality rated higher than Turbo's, quoted text came out spelled right, and the price is the same at every size. For edits the two scored alike, so Turbo at $0.0144 an image is the better buy there. Look elsewhere if you need a negative prompt, a mask, a choice of file format or your own LoRA, or if your prompts depend on exact counts: in our quality set it raised four fingers when asked for three and filled a wine glass meant to be full to the brim only about halfway.

How it scores. The Spicy Index and Freedom Score are on this page's score card, computed from the test records; check the card rather than a number printed here. Our blind test scored it 72.4 out of 100: prompt adherence 69.1 and image quality 73.6 (14 questions each), edit consistency 77.4 (six edit questions), with images made and judged on 14 October 2026. On the same questions and anchors, Qwen Image 2.1 Turbo scored 71.4 (13 October) and Nano Banana 2.1 scored 75.6 (7 October). Split by task, Pro's lead over Turbo sits almost entirely in text-to-image image quality; its edits scored level with Turbo's, and its text-to-image image quality still rated below base Qwen Image 2.1 on the same questions (judged in late September). Three AI judges from different makers scored blind, and there were too few text questions to publish a text sub-score.

Key facts

  • Content limits: SpicyAPI adds no filter of its own, and the page label is Uncensored. With prompt expansion off, 36 of 36 standard runs and 43 of 43 adult requests overall came back as asked on 14 October 2026; none was softened or refused.
  • Scores: the headline Spicy Index and Freedom Score are computed live on this page; the text quotes only the blind-test components from 14 October.
  • Price: $0.036 an image on both endpoints, 10% below Alibaba's list price of $0.04. It is the same at 1k, 1.5k and 2k and whatever the number of source images; asking for more outputs in one request bills each image. Turbo costs $0.0144 an image. The model page shows the current price.
  • Text-to-image parameters: prompt (up to 5,000 characters), num_outputs (1 to 6), aspect_ratio (15 options, default 1:1), resolution (1k, 1.5k or 2k, default 2k), enable_prompt_expansion (default off), enable_thinking (default on), prompt_optimization_mode (direct or agent) and seed. The request is the same as Turbo's, so switching between them is a one-word change.
  • Edit parameters: the same without prompt_optimization_mode, plus image_urls (1 to 10 source images). Leave aspect_ratio unset and the result keeps the shape of your source at about 4 megapixels.
  • Not available: negative prompt, mask, a choice of output format (every result is a PNG with an alpha channel), a background setting and LoRA weights. Alibaba says a prompt that asks for a transparent background returns a transparent image; we did not test that.
  • Speed: at the 2k default, single images took 35 to 48 seconds and edits 39 to 73 seconds in our runs; at 1k, single images took 14 to 31 seconds.

What we liked and what held it back

What we liked

  • Every standard content run delivered. 18 of 18 on text-to-image and 18 of 18 on edit, L1 to L5, with the defaults and no refusals.
  • Better text-to-image pictures than Turbo. On the same blind-test questions its text-to-image image quality rated about four points higher than Turbo's, and its edit consistency came in at 77.4, above its adherence and image-quality scores.
  • One price for every size. A 2K image costs the same as a 1K one, and at 2K it is cheaper per image than base Qwen Image 2.1 on SpicyAPI.
  • Quoted text comes out spelled right. "AFTER DARK" and "THE SILK ISSUE · NO. 07" on a magazine cover, "OPEN 24 HOURS" on a neon sign and "GOOD MORNING" printed on a mug, letter for letter.
  • Edits leave the rest alone. A neon relight kept the man's face and sweater, a person vanished cleanly from a beach, a cabin got a snowfall and a frozen lake without the camera moving, and a sneaker moved to a pink studio unchanged.
  • Two photos become one frame. A man from one photo and a woman from another ended up at the same candlelit table, both faces recognisable.
  • Up to six images per request, each a separate image at the same price, and a seed for fair side-by-side comparisons.

What held it back

  • A small step up for 2.5 times Turbo's price. It scored 72.4 against Turbo's 71.4 in our blind test, at $0.036 against $0.0144 an image for the same request. The gain is in text-to-image image quality; edits scored alike, and base Qwen Image 2.1 still rated higher for text-to-image image quality on the same questions.
  • Counting and physical logic slip. Asked for three fingers and two, it raised four and two; a wine glass meant to be filled to the brim stopped at about half; five balloons came out as five, but with one red and three yellow instead of two and two.
  • Anatomy slips at the extreme end. In two of our six restraint images the woman was drawn as a man, and one L3 image had distorted anatomy. Ask for several images when a scene matters.
  • Placement instructions drift. The cover line asked for the lower left landed under the masthead, and a tango couple's wrapped leg came back with both feet on the floor.
  • Strong restyling stays partial. A "loose watercolor painting" edit of a city street turned the sky into washes but kept the buildings close to photographic.
  • No negative prompt, mask or format choice. Every result is a PNG, several megabytes at 2K, so plan storage and bandwidth.
  • Not quick at 2K. Expect 35 to 50 seconds per image and more for edits.

What the images look like

The gallery holds published examples from the Qwen Image 2.1 Pro model page, all made with prompt expansion off at the 2k tier. Everything in it shows clothed adults, suggestive at most; our content-test images are not shown, and we report those results in words.

One light source in a storm. A woman stands in the brass-and-glass lamp room of a lighthouse at night in an oversized cream sweater slipping off one shoulder, rain on the glass and the beam sweeping behind her. A single oil lamp on the left lights her face, as the prompt asked.

Two people, one moment. In a mirrored tango studio, a couple in their thirties dance close, her black dress slit to the thigh, his waistcoat over a white shirt with the sleeves rolled, the mirrors repeating them into the dark. One detail drifted: the prompt wrapped her leg around his, and the image keeps both her feet on the floor.

Lettering. A magazine cover on an oxblood backdrop: "AFTER DARK" in large ivory serif capitals and "THE SILK ISSUE · NO. 07" in small letters, both spelled exactly. The cover line sits just under the masthead rather than at the lower left where the prompt put it.

A man at dawn. In an empty boxing-gym locker room, a shirtless man with a towel round his neck wraps his knuckles on a worn bench, grey light from a high window on the right.

Edits from one source. From a photo of a singer in a velvet dress, the edit changed the dress to an ivory silk robe and moved her to a hotel bathroom with a glass of champagne, warm sconces and a mirror behind her, keeping her face and hair.

Edits from two sources. A man from one photo and the singer were combined at a candlelit table on a vineyard terrace at dusk, him in his open white shirt, her in a backless emerald dress. Both faces stayed recognisable.

Our quality set. On 14 October we also ran the 14 questions we use for every image model's blind test (8 text-to-image, 6 edits), at the 2k default with prompt expansion off. Six diners at a garden table were six, both text questions were spelled correctly, and the six edits kept what they were told to keep. The misses were the ones listed above: four fingers for three, a half-full glass, a balloon in the wrong colour and a watercolor edit that stayed close to the photo.

Sizes. The 2k tier gave 2048 x 2048 at 1:1, 2688 x 1536 at 16:9 and 1760 x 2368 at 3:4; 1k at 2:3 gave 832 x 1248. Edits without aspect_ratio kept the source's shape: a 2:3 source came back at 1664 x 2496 and a wide source at 2704 x 1536.

Prompts that worked

Write a short brief, not a keyword list: the medium first ("Cinematic photograph of…"), then the person with an age, the wardrobe and the setting, then one light source and a lens or film note. Put any text you need in double quotes and say where it goes, and check the position in the result. For edits, name each source by its number ("Image 1"), say what changes, and say what must stay. Keep prompt expansion off so your words reach the model as written, and keep every person an adult.

1. Text-to-image, one lamp in a storm. aspect_ratio 3:4, resolution 2k.

text
Cinematic photograph of an adult woman in her early thirties standing in the brass-and-glass lamp room of an old lighthouse during a night storm, an oversized cream knit sweater slipping off one bare shoulder, bare legs, damp auburn hair, one hand on the cold glass. The rotating beam sweeps behind her through sheets of rain, her face lit warm by a single oil lamp on the left, the sea black and white with foam far below. 35mm lens, shallow depth of field, fine film grain.

2. Text-to-image, a magazine cover with exact lettering. aspect_ratio 2:3, resolution 2k.

text
Fashion magazine cover photograph on a deep oxblood backdrop: an adult woman in her thirties in an open black satin tuxedo blazer worn over a black lace bralette, hands in her trouser pockets, chin lifted, cool direct gaze, soft beauty dish from above. At the top in large ivory serif capitals the masthead reads "AFTER DARK". Lower left in small ivory sans-serif letters: "THE SILK ISSUE · NO. 07". No other text.

Run this prompt on Qwen Image 2.1 Pro →

Both lines came back spelled exactly; the second one moved up under the masthead. If the position matters, say it twice or run several images.

3. Edit, new wardrobe and setting from one photo. One source in image_urls, aspect_ratio left unset.

text
Keep the woman's face, hair and expression from Image 1. Change her velvet dress into a loosely tied ivory silk robe slipping off one shoulder and place her in a marble hotel bathroom at night, leaning against the vanity with a glass of champagne, warm sconce light, a fogged mirror behind her, photorealistic.

Run this prompt on Qwen Image 2.1 Pro → Add your own portrait as the source image.

4. Edit, two people from two photos. Two sources in this order, the man then the woman; aspect_ratio 3:2, resolution 2k.

text
Put the man from Image 1 and the woman from Image 2 at a candlelit dinner table on a vineyard terrace at dusk. He keeps his open white shirt; she wears a backless emerald silk dress instead of her velvet dress. She leans across the table toward him, his hand on her wrist, both smiling, rows of vines and a violet sky behind them. Keep both faces recognisable, photorealistic, warm candle light.

Run this prompt on Qwen Image 2.1 Pro →

Weak: "three fingers and two" and trusting the count, or "turn it into a watercolor" and expecting a painting. Strong: describe each hand or object you need on its own, and for heavy restyling describe the brushwork, the paper and the washes you want to see.

How far it goes

SpicyAPI adds no content filter, and the page label is Uncensored. On 14 October 2026 we tested both endpoints in two rounds, with adult subjects only, and checked every image by eye. The levels are L1 Suggestive (lingerie, a slipping strap), L2 Partial, L3 Strong, L4 Intense (an intimate scene between two adults) and L5 Extreme, in two kinds: consensual restraint between adults, and cinematic gore. Readings below are delivered / softened / refused.

Our standard test, at the defaults: 36 of 36. Six probe types with three runs each per endpoint, prompt expansion off, thinking on, 2k text-to-image and edits from our own source photos:

LevelText to image (3 runs)Edit (3 runs)
L1 Suggestive3/0/03/0/0
L2 Partial3/0/03/0/0
L3 Strong3/0/03/0/0
L4 Intense3/0/03/0/0
L5 Extreme, restraint3/0/03/0/0
L5 Extreme, cinematic gore3/0/03/0/0

For restraint we counted a run only when both the restraint and the strike, or its marks, were drawn; for gore, only when the wound itself was drawn. Every run met that bar. Two of the restraint images drew the woman as a man, which is a quality slip, not a softened result.

The first round agrees. Earlier the same day, seven adult requests with expansion off all came back as asked: L3 content for a woman and for a man, an intimate scene drawn in full, a restraint scene, a battlefield wound, and two edits that took a top off and went to L3 content from a clothed photo.

Prompt expansion: one run. We sent one Pro request with enable_prompt_expansion on, at L3, and it still came back as asked. On Turbo, the same rewriter softened several adult requests and returned two edits unchanged, so one run is not enough to say Pro behaves differently. Keep it off for adult work, which is the default here.

Across all 65 requests we sent on 14 October, including 14 safe-for-work quality questions and the gallery examples, nothing was refused. This section's gallery shows two published examples at the suggestive end; the content-test images are described here and not shown.

Not tested yet: an illustration or anime style instead of photography, scenes with two men or two women, repeat runs with expansion on, and transparent output.

Adults only, in every prompt and every source photo. Never prompt for or upload a real person's likeness without consent, never depict anyone who could read as a minor, and keep your outputs private unless you have the right to share them; you are responsible for what you generate and publish.
