Alibaba shipped Qwen Image 2.1 on 21 September 2026, and we had it on our content ladder within days. On 24 September we ran every rung — L1 Suggestive (lingerie, a slipping strap), L2 Mature themes, L3 Strong, L4 Intense (an intimate scene between two adults) and L5 Extreme, in two kinds: L5a (consensual restraint and impact play between adults) and L5b (cinematic gore) — across text-to-image and its 10-reference editor: 34 of our 35 runs came back exactly as asked, and none was refused.

The verdict

The one exception is worth naming plainly. A single L4 Intense run on text-to-image came back with the requested action swapped for something milder — a soft miss, not a refusal, and it happened once in 35 tries. Image-to-image had no misses at all: 18 of 18 runs across all five rungs landed exactly as written.

Pick Qwen Image 2.1 when you want a current, uncensored base model at $0.024 a still and an editor that reads up to 10 reference images in one call. If a clean run at L4 Intense matters more to you than a single edge case, its LoRA sibling posted a perfect record on the same base; see Alternatives below.

How it scores. The Spicy Index and Freedom Score are shown on this page's score card and are being calculated as we add runs; check the card for the current numbers rather than a figure printed in this text.

Key facts

  • Pass rate: 34 of 35 runs on 24 Sep 2026 came back exactly as asked across text-to-image and image-to-image, all five content-ladder rungs and both L5 Extreme probe types; one L4 Intense text-to-image run came back softened.
  • Scores: the Spicy Index and Freedom Score are on this page's score card, recalculated as runs are added.
  • Price: $0.024 a still at 1K on text-to-image, $0.048 at 1.5K and 2K; editing runs $0.036 at 1K, $0.072 at 1.5K and $0.048 at 2K.
  • Limits: 15 aspect ratios, three resolution tiers, one image per request, and up to 10 reference images on the editor.
  • Sources: every scored run is in the Qwen Image 2.1 test report, the scoring rules are on our review methodology page, and the full parameter list is on the Qwen Image 2.1 model page.

What we liked and what held it back

What we liked

  • A current base model, already tested. Released 21 September 2026 and live on our content ladder within days, not months.
  • A 10-image editor. The edit endpoint reads up to 10 reference images in one call — enough to merge a subject from one photo onto a setting from another, or hold a face steady across several edits.
  • 15 aspect ratios, three resolution tiers. Both endpoints share the same 1K, 1.5K and 2K ladder and the same wide aspect-ratio set, from square through ultra-wide.
  • $0.024 a still to start. Text-to-image at 1K is priced at the low end of our current image catalogue.
  • Near-clean content-ladder record. 34 of 35 runs across both endpoints came back exactly as asked, including both L5 Extreme probe types. We add no content filter of our own; the page label is Uncensored.
  • Editing holds detail under strong side light. In our tests, striped window light and lace texture both survived an edit pass without the composition drifting.

What held it back

  • One L4 Intense run came back softened. On text-to-image, a single run out of three at that rung had its requested action swapped for a milder scene. The other two landed as written, and every L4 run on image-to-image landed as written.
  • 2K editing costs less than 1.5K. $0.048 at 2K versus $0.072 at 1.5K on the editor — a real, non-obvious step in our current pricing that's worth checking before you pick a tier.
  • No custom LoRA slot on this endpoint. If you want to load your own trained weights on the same base, use Qwen Image 2.1 LoRA instead.
  • One image per call. There's a seed field for repeatable results, but no batch or num_outputs control.
  • We haven't tested its lettering. For legible text baked into the image, Qwen Image 3.0 is built for that; see Alternatives.

What the images look like

The gallery holds published examples from the Qwen Image 2.1 model page, shown as rendered. Our content-ladder frames aren't shown; we report those results in prose instead.

Hard side light on skin and linen. A figure lies across rumpled white linen, one arm folded under the head; late-morning sun through venetian blinds lays parallel stripes across the back and the bedding, in a medium-format film look.

One lamp, one edge lit. Kneeling on a dark velvet chaise in black lace, seen from behind and glancing back over one shoulder, a single hard lamp from the left leaves most of the frame in near-black — lace texture catching the light exactly where it crosses the spine.

The same pose, redressed by the editor. Feeding the first image back through image-to-image with an instruction to add a sheer ivory slip dress and keep everything else unchanged returns the identical pose, the identical striped light and the identical grain — only the wardrobe changes.

Two references merged into one chaise. The editor can also take a subject from one reference and a setting from another and combine them into a single frame, holding the chaise, the lamp and the palette from the second image while keeping the pose from the first.

Prompts that worked

Qwen Image 2.1 rewards concrete, sentence-length direction: a subject, a pose, a light source and a film or lens reference, in that order. Editing prompts work well when you name exactly what changes and add "change nothing else in the frame" at the end — the model otherwise tends to redraw more of the picture than you asked for.

1. Text-to-image, hard side light.

text
Photograph of an adult woman lying on her side across rumpled white linen, seen from behind, one arm folded under her head and a sheet gathered across her hip. Late morning sun through venetian blinds lays hard parallel stripes across her back, her shoulder and the bedding. Medium-format film look, soft grain, honey and cream palette, warm skin against cool shadow. Calm and unposed.

2. Text-to-image, one hard lamp.

text
Low-key studio portrait of an adult woman kneeling on a dark velvet chaise in a black lace bodysuit and sheer stockings, seen from behind, looking back over her shoulder. A single hard lamp from the left gives one edge of her body and drops the rest to near black; lace texture catches the light where it crosses her spine. 85mm, shallow depth of field, heavy grain, oxblood and black.

3. Editing: change the wardrobe, hold everything else.

text
Keep the bed, the linen, the blinds, the striped light and her pose exactly as they are. Dress her in a sheer ivory slip that the striped light passes through, the strap fallen off one shoulder, the hem gathered at her thigh. Match the existing grain, colour grade and the way the sun falls across the fabric. Change nothing else in the frame.

Weak: "A woman in lingerie, moody lighting." Nothing tells the model where the light comes from or what the camera is doing. Strong: prompt 2 — one light source, one lens spec, one film-grain note, in that order.

How far it goes

On 24 September 2026 we ran every rung of our content ladder on both endpoints: L1 Suggestive, L2 Mature themes, L3 Strong, L4 Intense, and both L5 Extreme probe types (restraint/impact and gore). Image-to-image went 18 for 18 — nothing softened, nothing refused, at any rung. Text-to-image went 16 of 17: one L4 Intense run came back with the requested action swapped for something milder, and every other run at every other rung, including both L5 Extreme probes, rendered exactly as written. Across both endpoints that's 34 of 35 runs landing as asked, with zero refusals anywhere in the test. The page label is Uncensored: we add no content filter on our side.

For a wider look at Qwen's whole line side by side, including its LoRA and editing siblings on the same day, see our Qwen Image 2.1 uncensored test.

Not tested yet: the content ladder with an illustration or anime style rather than photography; scenes with two men or two women (our runs used single-subject frames and one mixed-gender pair); a repeat of the softened L4 Intense run to see whether it reproduces.

Adults only, in every prompt and output. Never depict a real, identifiable person without their consent.
