Platform comparison

SpicyAPI vs fal.ai

The closest comparison on this list: both platforms are built around generative media rather than text, and both answer with a job you poll or get called back about. The differences are in what gets filtered before the model sees it, and in what stops a request loop.

Starting point

What each platform is built around

fal.ai

fal describes itself as a generative media platform for developers, with image, video and audio models reached through a queue API, a CLI for deploying your own applications onto its runtime, and a hosted MCP server. Billing is by output where a model has a fixed output price and by GPU-second where it does not.

SpicyAPI

We are built around the same category of work, and we have made two different choices: no moderation layer of our own in front of the model, and caps that are decided when the task is admitted rather than when the balance runs out. Text runs on the same key through an OpenAI-compatible surface.

What you are comparingSpicyAPIfal.ai
Content policyNo per-request content review, no safety-checker parameter to negotiate and no content-mode flag on the key. What a model will or will not produce is decided by that model. Unlawful use stays prohibited by the acceptable use policy and the reporting channel is public. An acceptable use policy with specific prohibitions, plus an automated moderation API integrated platform-wide. Image endpoints take enable_safety_checker, which defaults to true; disabling it requires account authorization, and unauthorized requests are always checked, with flagged images returned as black frames.
How you are billedUS dollars, per the unit the task itself is measured in. No credit currency to convert, no subscription, no plan tier, no monthly minimum. A quote call prices the exact body you are about to send and reserves nothing. Balance is topped up by card or crypto (USDT).Prepaid credits, billed by output — per image, per megapixel or per output second — falling back to GPU-second rates where a model has no fixed output price. Purchased credits expire 365 days from purchase and are non-refundable; promotional credits expire sooner.
A failed requestA successful task is settled at what the run used and is not refunded because the output disappointed. Failed or timed-out tasks are usually not charged. Some models charge for content refusals as stated on their model page; check those billing terms before submitting.Server errors of HTTP 500 and above are never billed, and queue wait time is free. Client-side errors such as an invalid input may still be charged where a runner had already spent GPU time before the error was detected.
Request shapeOne create call answers 202 with a task ID; results arrive by polling or by signed webhook. Text speaks an OpenAI-compatible surface on the same key. Input is validated against a published schema with additionalProperties closed, and every write accepts an Idempotency-Key for 24 hours. An async queue is the recommended path: submit, poll status, fetch the result, with webhooks retried for about an hour. A direct synchronous call is also offered but documented as having no queue, retries or durability. An OpenAI-compatible chat surface is listed as a catalogue entry.
Spend controlsSet daily, monthly and lifetime spending caps on each key. New keys have no spending cap until you set one. You can also restrict a key to selected models and source IP addresses; unsettled holds count toward its allowance. No per-key or monthly spend cap appears in the public documentation. The account locks when the credit balance falls below a threshold, and concurrency limits bound throughput rather than spend.
Official toolingNative REST plus an OpenAI-compatible surface, our own SDK, CLI, MCP server and Agent Skill, all on the same key.First-party clients for Python, JavaScript, Swift, Kotlin/Java and Dart; a CLI for deploying and managing applications; and a hosted MCP server exposing model search, schemas, pricing, job submission and uploads.
Published commitmentsA published operational target of 99.9% for our own layer — accepting requests, admitting tasks, delivering callbacks. It is a target, not a service level agreement: no service credits, no compensation, and it excludes the third-party model providers that execute generation, announced maintenance windows and events outside our control. Live status is published at status.spicyapi.ai.No uptime commitment or service level agreement appears in the public documentation. The terms reserve the right to suspend or limit access where the platform determines the service is being used in violation of law.
LanguagesSite, model documentation, console and API error text in ten languages: English, Japanese, Korean, German, French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Italian and Polish. Error codes never change with the language, so your branching stays stable.Documentation observed in English only, with no alternate-language versions advertised.

Content policy

What the platform will refuse, and who decides

For an unfiltered character workflow, inspect the selected endpoint's safety setting and account requirements. A toggle alone does not tell you whether the model can produce your scene.

How you are billed

What one unit of billing actually is

Match size, output count and duration before comparing fal's rate with a SpicyAPI quote. For GPU-second billing, compare active run time rather than queue wait.

Request shape

What the HTTP response means

Keep your background worker; replace fal's request_id, status_url and model-specific output parser. Fetch the result after completion rather than treating the status response as the image.

Spend controls

What stops a loop that has gone wrong

Concurrency limits control simultaneous work, not daily spending. Give the migrated integration its own SpicyAPI key with a daily cap, while retaining your app's queue limits.

Fit

Which one fits the work you are doing

Pick fal.ai when

  • You want to deploy your own model code onto the platform's runtime, not only call models it already hosts — the CLI and application model are built for that and we do not offer it.
  • Your workload is squarely inside their acceptable use policy and you would rather have a moderation layer catching things than not.
  • You need a client library for Swift, Kotlin or Dart today. Our first-party SDK surface is narrower.

Pick SpicyAPI when

  • Requests are being refused by a filter rather than by the model, and you want the model's own behaviour to be the limit.
  • You need a spend cap that is enforced when the task is admitted — per key, per day, per month and across the key's whole life — rather than a balance that stops things only once it is empty.
  • The same key needs to cover media and OpenAI-compatible text, and you want error text and documentation in a language other than English.

FAQ

Questions about fal.ai and SpicyAPI

Per its published acceptable use policy, fal prohibits several specific categories including content that harms minors, non-consensual imagery of real people, and content depicting or promoting abuse. Its trust and safety page states an automated moderation API is integrated platform-wide. Image endpoints expose an enable_safety_checker parameter that defaults to true, and the model documentation states that disabling it requires account authorization. Read their policy yourself before relying on this summary.
