Face Swap Plus Review: Automatic Skin-Tone Matching, No Prompt Control

Pick Face Swap Plus for cross-skin-tone pairs where the engine should judge face-only vs. whole-head on its own; don't rely on its prompt field to steer it.

Face Swap Plus takes the same two-photo request as the rest of this line — image_url for the target, reference_image_url for the face — and adds two things: it reconciles skin tone between the two sources as part of the transfer, and it decides per pair whether to blend the face alone or the whole head, whichever reads more naturally for that pair. You don't get a say in which one it picks. It also accepts a prompt field capped at 200 characters, but five real calls we sent on 20 September 2026 — sunglasses, a hairstyle change, an expression change — came back indistinguishable from the same request with the field left empty. On the single L3 probe we ran on 19 September 2026, the request rendered as asked. It costs $0.16 per image.

The verdict

Reach for this endpoint when the two source photos have visibly different skin tones or lighting setups and you want that reconciled without a manual grade. Don't reach for it expecting the prompt field to change sunglasses, hair or expression — send that work to an editing model instead.

What we liked and what held it back

What we liked

  • Skin-tone matching happens without asking. The backstage example deliberately seats two performers of different complexions under the same tungsten bulbs; the blend reconciles the tone difference as part of the transfer, with no separate step.
  • It reads which kind of transfer a pair needs. In the ponytail example the engine judged a whole-head blend read more naturally and carried the reference's hair across with the face; in the poolside example, shot under mismatched studio and midday light, it left the wet slicked-back hair in place and moved only the face. Same endpoint, two different calls, two different decisions.
  • Output format is yours to pick. output_format takes PNG, JPEG or WebP, and all three cost the same — pick whichever your pipeline wants.
  • A seed keeps a pair comparable. Re-running the same photos with the same seed gives you a result you can compare run to run.
  • It holds up on hard lighting. The steam-room example mixes cool window daylight with warm tungsten spill on wet skin; the beard line and jaw — the parts a lighting clash usually gives away — stay intact.

What held it back

  • The prompt field is dead weight. It's accepted and capped at 200 characters, but we sent five real instructions on 20 September 2026 — add sunglasses, restyle the hair, soften the expression, widen the smile — and none of them changed the output. Nothing in the response flags this; the field just does nothing observable.
  • No control over face-only vs. whole-head. The engine decides per pair, and there's no setting to force one or the other. If the target's hairline has to survive every time, that's Face Swap or Face Swap Pro instead.
  • Costs more than the plain transfer. At $0.16 an image it's more than ten times the price of Face Swap or Head Swap for photos that don't need the tone-matching or the automatic blend decision.
  • One face per photo, same as the rest of the line. A group shot in either source gives the engine nothing to disambiguate.
  • No synchronous call. Every request is async: submit, get a task id, poll to a terminal state.

What the images look like

The gallery holds published, safe-for-work examples from the Face Swap Plus model page.

Cross-tone under one light. Two performers of different complexions under the same tungsten bulbs, output as PNG for a colour grade — skin-tone matching is what this endpoint does on its own.

Where the engine chooses whole-head. A severe black ponytail target loses its hair entirely; the engine judged the reference's red hair belonged with the transferred features here.

Where the engine chooses face-only. The same endpoint, the opposite call: wet slicked-back hair stays, and only the face moves, despite a studio-to-midday lighting mismatch between the two sources.

A hard edge case. A large mane of curls under club haze with a magenta key from one side and a teal kicker from the other — worth zooming in on the hairline, where a swap usually gives itself away.

Prompts that don't do anything here

Face Swap Plus accepts a prompt field, but treat it as inert. We ran five distinct instructions through it on 20 September 2026 — add mirrored aviator sunglasses, wearing black sunglasses, restyle the hair into a sleek straight bob, soften the expression into a faint half smile, and a wide open-mouthed laugh — against real photo pairs, and every result was indistinguishable from the same pair with the field empty. No error, no warning: the value is accepted and billed the same either way. If you need sunglasses added, a hairstyle changed or an expression adjusted, send that instruction to an image editor instead, and use this endpoint only for the face transfer itself.

How far it goes

On 19 September 2026 we ran our L3 Strong probe against Face Swap Plus once, and it rendered as asked with no refusal or substitution. That's a single run on a single rung — one confirmed data point, not a claim about every pair of photos. See the score card on this page for the current count as we add more runs.

Adults only, in every photo. Both the target and the reference need to show people who agreed to have their likeness processed this way — your own photos, or ones you're authorised to edit. Never a real person's face used without consent, and never a stand-in for a celebrity or public figure who didn't agree to it.

Alternatives

  • Same transfer, a fraction of the price? Face Swap does the plain feature-only transfer for $0.013, with no automatic tone-matching.
  • Want the transfer with no smoothing pass over skin texture? Face Swap Pro skips the retouch step at the same $0.16 price.
  • Need the whole head, hair included, on your own terms rather than the engine's? Head Swap always moves the full head for $0.013.
