Face Swap Review: Fast, Cheap Feature-Only Swaps

Face Swap does one job: it lifts the facial features out of a reference photo and drops them into a target photo, leaving the target's hairstyle, head shape, pose, wardrobe, lighting and background exactly where they were. There's no prompt box, no mask and no strength slider — two image URLs in, one image out, for $0.013. On the single L3 Strong probe we ran on 15 September 2026, the request rendered as asked.

The verdict

That narrow job description is the point. If you already have a target frame you like — a costume shot, a portrait with a specific lighting setup, a scene you built with another model — and you just need a different, consented face in it, Face Swap does that cheaply and predictably. If you want the hairstyle or hair colour to travel too, that's a different endpoint in this line; see Alternatives.

What we liked and what held it back

What we liked

  • It leaves everything but the face alone. Hairline, head silhouette, pose, wardrobe, lighting and background all come back untouched. In the sunflower-field example, a raised hand and a hat brim partly covering the face survive the swap along with the golden-hour backlight.
  • Cheap per call. At $0.013 an image it costs a fraction of Face Swap Plus and Face Swap Pro on this platform, which both run $0.16 for a comparable transfer.
  • Predictable input shape. image_url is the frame you're changing, reference_image_url supplies the face, and an optional seed holds a pair steady across retries. There's nothing else to configure, so there's nothing else to get wrong.
  • Loud details survive when they should. The silver-bob example keeps a blunt platinum bob, lace sleeves and a hard side key exactly as shot; only the face moves.
  • Fast to integrate. One request shape, one output image, billed per completed generation the same way every time.

What held it back

  • image_url and reference_image_url are easy to swap by mistake. They aren't interchangeable — get them backwards and you get a valid, completely different result, with no error to catch it. Name your variables carefully.
  • A jawline mismatch is the most common failure. The two source photos need roughly matching light direction; a reference lit from the opposite side of the target shows a seam at the jaw.
  • No hairstyle transfer. If the target's hair, hairline or head shape needs to change along with the face, this endpoint keeps them as they were — that's Head Swap's job instead.
  • One face per photo. A group shot in either the target or the reference gives the engine nothing to disambiguate; crop to the subject first.
  • No batch mode and no prompt. Each call returns one image for one pair, and there's no text field to nudge the result — the two photos are the entire request.

What the images look like

The gallery holds published, safe-for-work examples from the Face Swap model page. Each one pairs a fully art-directed target frame with a single consented reference face and nothing else changed.

Torchlit set, features only. A target built with sweat-darkened hair and low torchlight; the pattern this endpoint is built for — head shape, hairstyle and lighting all carry over from the target, and only the face comes from the reference.

A full-layout frame plus one face. The pattern behind most before-and-afters on the model page: a complete target frame and one reference face, everything else left at defaults.

Daylight instead of a lit set. Golden-hour backlight, a raised hand across the face and a hat brim in the way — the same two-field call, proof the endpoint doesn't need a clean, front-lit target to work.

What doesn't move. A blunt platinum bob is the loudest thing in this frame, and it comes through the swap untouched along with the lace sleeves and the hard side key.

How far it goes

On 15 September 2026 we ran our L3 Strong probe against Face Swap once, and the request came back as asked — the transfer went through with no refusal or substitution. That's a single run on a single rung, not a full pass across the content ladder, so treat it as one confirmed data point rather than a guarantee for every pair of photos. The page label reflects what our runs have shown so far; see the score card on this page for the up-to-date count as we add more.

Adults only, in every photo. Both the target and the reference need to show people who agreed to have their likeness processed this way — this endpoint is for your own photos or ones you're authorised to edit, never a real person's face used without their consent, and never a stand-in for a celebrity or public figure they didn't agree to.

Not tested yet: the other rungs of our content ladder on this endpoint, and multi-face targets.

Alternatives

  • Need the hairstyle and hair colour to travel with the face? Head Swap moves the whole head instead, same $0.013 price and the same two-field request shape.
  • Want the engine to decide face-only vs. whole-head per pair, with automatic skin-tone matching? Face Swap Plus does that for $0.16 an image.
  • Want the transfer with no smoothing pass, so pores, freckles and skin texture stay sharp? Face Swap Pro is the same feature-only transfer at $0.16, built for close-ups.
