Platform comparison

SpicyAPI vs OpenRouter

OpenRouter is a router first: one key in front of hundreds of language models, with provider fallback and routing controls we deliberately do not expose. It has since added image, video and speech endpoints, and that is where the two platforms start to overlap.

Starting point

What each platform is built around

OpenRouter

OpenRouter puts one OpenAI-compatible API in front of 400+ models served by many providers, and falls back to another provider when one fails before any output reaches you. Per-model prices are documented as passed through from the provider without markup; the platform charges its fee when you buy credits. Next to chat it now documents dedicated endpoints for image generation, asynchronous video, text-to-speech, transcription and embeddings, all on the same base URL.

SpicyAPI

Language models are where OpenRouter is strongest and our catalogue is narrowest, and if you need that breadth with provider-level routing controls, they are the better fit. We are built the other way round: generative media first, with no moderation layer of our own in front of the model, and OpenAI-compatible text on the same key.

Content policyNo per-request content review, no safety-checker parameter to negotiate and no content-mode flag on the key. What a model will or will not produce is decided by that model. Unlawful use stays prohibited by the acceptable use policy and the reporting channel is public. The terms carry no general clause on uncensored content. They prohibit illegal use and child sexual abuse material, and require you to comply with each model's own terms, which differ by provider and flow down to your users. Operationally, the models API flags whether a provider applies moderation, filter blocks and model refusals come back as HTTP 403, and the terms let OpenRouter screen or block inputs it judges objectionable. Jailbreaking a model without written approval is prohibited.
How you are billedUS dollars, per the unit the task itself is measured in. No credit currency to convert, no subscription, no plan tier, no monthly minimum. A quote call prices the exact body you are about to send and reserves nothing. Balance is topped up by card or crypto (USDT).Prepaid credits with US dollars as the base currency, bought from $5 to $25,000 per transaction, with a 5.5% fee on card purchases ($0.80 minimum) and 5% on crypto. Model prices are documented as matching the provider's, with no markup on inference. Unused credits are refundable only within 24 hours of purchase, the fee never is, crypto payments never are, and credits may be expired 365 days after purchase.
A failed requestA successful task is settled at what the run used and is not refunded because the output disappointed. Failed or timed-out tasks are usually not charged. Some models charge for content refusals as stated on their model page; check those billing terms before submitting.Zero Completion Insurance, on for every account: a response with no output tokens and a blank or error finish reason is not billed for prompt, completion or reasoning tokens, and image or speech requests that deliver no usable output are not billed. Web search, PDF parsing and web fetch that already ran can still be charged. The errors page separately says prompt processing may still be charged when no content is generated, and the video documentation does not say whether a failed job is billed.
Request shapeOne create call answers 202 with a task ID; results arrive by polling or by signed webhook. Text speaks an OpenAI-compatible surface on the same key. Input is validated against a published schema with additionalProperties closed, and every write accepts an Idempotency-Key for 24 hours.OpenAI-compatible chat completions, plus Responses and Anthropic Messages endpoints, with streaming and automatic fallback to another provider until the first token is sent. Images come back synchronously as base64. Video is asynchronous: submit, poll the job ID, then download the file with your API key, or receive a webhook at the terminal state, signed when you configure a secret.
Spend controlsSet daily, monthly and lifetime spending caps on each key. New keys have no spending cap until you set one. You can also restrict a key to selected models and source IP addresses; unsettled holds count toward its allowance. Each key takes one credit limit that can reset daily, weekly or monthly at midnight UTC, or never; the documented error when it runs out is 402. Guardrails add a USD budget with its own reset plus model and provider allowlists, assigned per key and per organisation member, and the lower limit wins. Workspace budgets with up to four intervals, including lifetime, are available on the Enterprise plan.
Official toolingNative REST plus an OpenAI-compatible surface, our own SDK, CLI, MCP server and Agent Skill, all on the same key.First-party SDKs for TypeScript, Python and Go, agent skills for those SDKs, and a hosted MCP server — documented as a tool for looking up models, prices and credits and sending test messages while you build, not for running models in production.
Published commitmentsA published operational target of 99.9% for our own layer — accepting requests, admitting tasks, delivering callbacks. It is a target, not a service level agreement: no service credits, no compensation, and it excludes the third-party model providers that execute generation, announced maintenance windows and events outside our control. Live status is published at status.spicyapi.ai.The terms provide models on an as-available basis, guarantee the availability of none of them, and refer you to each model's own terms for uptime. The enterprise page offers priority support and a dedicated engineering contact but publishes no uptime percentage or service level agreement.
LanguagesSite, model documentation, console and API error text in ten languages: English, Japanese, Korean, German, French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Italian and Polish. Error codes never change with the language, so your branching stays stable.Documentation observed in English only; its pages carry no alternate-language versions, and language-prefixed documentation paths return not found.

Content policy

What the platform will refuse, and who decides

For chat without a content filter, check both the model and provider preferences. Fallback can select another provider; do not assume one provider's refusal behaviour describes every routed response.

How you are billed

What one unit of billing actually is

Compare input, output and cached-token rates, then include credit-purchase fees and optional tools. An image or video workload needs its own task price rather than a text-token comparison.

Request shape

What the HTTP response means

Chat clients may retain their OpenAI structure, but provider.order, allow_fallbacks and require_parameters are OpenRouter controls. Review them explicitly; media generation also needs its destination-specific request and result mapping.

Spend controls

What stops a loop that has gone wrong

Translate key limits and guardrails deliberately. OpenRouter offers weekly resets; SpicyAPI keys use daily, calendar-month and lifetime caps. Keep a weekly customer budget in your app if required.

Fit

Which one fits the work you are doing

Pick OpenRouter when

  • Text is the main workload and you want hundreds of language models from many providers behind one key. Their text catalogue is far broader than ours.
  • You want to steer routing yourself — pick or exclude providers, enforce zero data retention per model group, or keep traffic to EU or US endpoints on their Business and Enterprise plans. We do not expose provider selection, by design.
  • You already hold keys with model providers and want one bill and one dashboard over them. Bring-your-own-key is built into their billing; we do not offer it.

Pick SpicyAPI when

  • Uncensored image and video models are the core of the job rather than an add-on, and you want a platform that adds no filtering layer of its own and passes your prompt to the model as submitted.
  • You want every media model to answer in the same shape — one create call, then polling or a signed webhook — instead of a synchronous image endpoint and an asynchronous video endpoint with different contracts.
  • You want daily, monthly and lifetime spending caps that you configure for each key, plus error messages and documentation in your language.

FAQ

Questions about OpenRouter and SpicyAPI

OpenRouter's own terms have no general clause about uncensored content: they prohibit illegal use and child sexual abuse material, and they make you responsible for complying with the terms of each model you call. Whether an uncensored request goes through therefore depends on which model and provider serves it, and on whether that provider applies moderation, which the models API flags. Blocks and refusals return HTTP 403. Read the model terms OpenRouter links for each model before relying on this summary.
