Claude × SpicyAPI · MCP server
Generate images and video from Claude
Claude can't draw pictures on its own. Connect it to the SpicyAPI MCP server and it can: ask in plain words, and Claude picks one of 145 image and video models, shows you the exact price and starts the job only after you say yes.

Can Claude generate images?
Not by itself, but it can through MCP. Here is the short version.
On its own: no
Claude writes text and code. It can sketch diagrams and charts as code, but it doesn't produce photos, illustrations or video.
With MCP: yes
MCP (Model Context Protocol) lets Claude use outside tools. Add the SpicyAPI server and Claude can find a model, upload your file, get a quote and start the job for you.
You stay in charge of spending
Every paid step stops and asks you first, with the price in US dollars. Claude can't approve it for you.
Which Claude apps work
The SpicyAPI MCP server runs on your own computer. That decides where it works today.
Claude Code
Works end to end
Runs in your terminal or code editor. It shows SpicyAPI's price question and waits for your yes. The best place to start.
Claude Desktop
Connects; check paid runs
Add one block to its config file. Claude can browse models and fetch prices. Starting a paid job needs the app to show SpicyAPI's confirmation question; if your version can't, the job stops before anything is charged.
claude.ai in a browser
Not yet
The web app only connects to hosted connector URLs, and SpicyAPI doesn't offer one yet. Use Claude Code or Claude Desktop for now.
Cursor, VS Code, Codex, Windsurf
Same server
The same command works in other AI apps, including when they run Claude models.
Set it up in 3 steps
About ten minutes, no coding. You need Node.js, a SpicyAPI key and one of the apps above.
Install Node.js
Claude starts the server with npx, which comes with Node.js 22.13 or later. Check with node --version; if it's missing or older, install the current LTS version.
Get Node.jsCreate an API key
In the console, choose Create key and copy it. It starts with sk-spicy- and is shown once. You can give it a daily cap so a mistake can't spend more than you planned.
Open API keysAdd SpicyAPI to Claude
Copy the block for your app, put your key in place of the placeholder, then restart the app.
export SPICY_API_KEY="sk-spicy-..."
claude mcp add --scope user spicyapi \
-e SPICY_API_KEY=$SPICY_API_KEY \
-- npx --yes --package=@spicyapi/mcp spicyapi-mcpRun both commands in the same terminal. --scope user makes SpicyAPI available in every project; don't use --scope project, which writes the key into your repository. Check with claude mcp list.

Check that it works
Ask Claude these two things. Neither costs anything.
- “Check the SpicyAPI service status.”
- “What is my SpicyAPI balance?”
What you can ask Claude to make
Ask in your own words. Claude picks a model and the settings, or uses the one you name.
A picture from a description
“Make a 3:4 portrait of a lighthouse keeper at dawn, film grain. Pick an inexpensive model and show me the price first.”
Text to image on any of the image models.
From $0.0018 per image
Bring a photo to life
“Turn ~/Pictures/harbour.jpg into a 5-second clip with a slow push-in.”
Claude uploads the photo from your computer and starts an image-to-video job.
From $0.011 per output second
Make a clip longer
“Continue my last video for another 5 seconds. Keep the camera drifting toward the window.”
Video extend picks up where a clip ends, on the models that support it.
From $0.011 per output second
Sharpen a result
“Upscale the picture you just made.”
Upscalers for pictures and video, priced per image or per second.
From $0.012 per image
Compare before you spend
Browsing models and fetching quotes is free.
“Compare what a 5-second clip costs on three video models.”
What it costs
The server is free
The MCP server is free and open source. You pay only for the jobs you approve.
Pay per call
Each picture or clip is billed to your SpicyAPI balance in US dollars, not to your Claude plan. No subscription.
Price first, then the job
Claude fetches the exact quote before every paid job. Video is priced per second, so a longer clip costs more.
If a job fails
The money held for a failed job is normally released. A few models say on their page that a refused request is still billed.
Models Claude can call

Claude decides what it sends
Claude follows Anthropic's usage policies, so it may reword or decline some requests even when the model you picked would accept them. SpicyAPI can't change that. This page is about range and pay-per-call pricing. If you want your prompt to reach the model exactly as you wrote it, use Studio or call the API directly: SpicyAPI adds no content filter of its own, and what a request can produce depends on the model.
