Prefect Pony XL Review: An Anime Specialist, Not a Camera

Pick Prefect Pony XL for anime, illustration and NSFW art prompted with quality tags; do not send it a photographic brief and expect it to follow it.

Prefect Pony XL is a community-merged SDXL checkpoint built on the Pony Diffusion lineage — an anime and illustration specialist, not a general-purpose camera model, and it is uncensored by design: there's no maturity flag and no separate endpoint, every prompt runs the same way. In our 27 September arena run, where every model in the batch got the same 59 plain-English prompts, this is the one that showed most clearly why prompting style matters: it drew anime illustrations for almost everything, including prompts written as straight photography briefs, and it drew them well only when the subject matter was already anime-shaped.

The verdict

Pick it when you're prompting it its own way — comma-separated quality tags, not prose — for anime characters, illustration and NSFW art. Do not point it at a product photo, an architectural shot or a logic puzzle and expect it to follow the brief; on our test set it missed the mark on the large majority of anything that wasn't already an anime scene.

Key facts

  • Content ladder: on 18 September 2026 we ran one probe each at L2 Partial, L3 Strong and L4 Intense; all three rendered as asked. We have not yet tested L1 Suggestive or L5 Extreme, and each rung has only a single run logged so far.
  • Price: $0.015 per image, flat, at any of seven fixed SDXL-native sizes.
  • Limits: no negative prompt, no image input, no LoRA slot, one image per request; arbitrary width and height are rejected, only the seven trained sizes are accepted.
  • Sources: every scored run is on the Prefect Pony XL test report, scoring rules on our review methodology page, full parameters on the Prefect Pony XL model page.

What we liked and what held it back

What we liked

  • Anime scenes land when the prompt is written for them. A silver-haired anime woman on a sunset rooftop, a mech kneeling in vine-covered ruins, and a hand-painted anime bicycle-and-sunflower background all came out recognisably in the right genre with usable line quality.
  • It's built for tag prompting, and the model page shows you the format. Comma-separated quality tags first (score_9, score_8_up), then subject and wardrobe tags, is the convention this checkpoint was trained on — follow it and you get an image built for the trained shape rather than a stretched, off-ratio one.
  • Flat, low price regardless of size or seed. $0.015 an image whichever of the seven native sizes you pick, whether or not you pass a seed.
  • A seed reliably rebuilds a frame. Pin one while you compare wardrobe or pose tags and the composition holds; leave it out to explore freely.
  • It doesn't add a content filter or a maturity flag. Every prompt, tame or not, runs through the same single endpoint.

What held it back

  • It ignores photographic and design briefs almost entirely. Sent our plain-English test prompts — the same ones every other model in the batch received — it repeatedly swapped the requested scene for an unrelated anime illustration: a request for a croissant photograph came back as a decorated layered cake, a Swiss jazz poster came back as an abstract photo collage with no readable text, and a request for four app icons came back as handwritten sheet music. This isn't a case of poor quality on the right subject; the subject itself is usually wrong.
  • It doesn't read plain sentences as instructions. A "no plants" negative constraint was ignored, a mirror-reflection logic prompt and a horse-riding-astronaut prompt both came back as an unrelated anime scene, and a two-groom wedding-dance prompt came back as a groom and a fairy.
  • It needs its own prompting style, and most people won't know that going in. The model's own examples use quality-tag strings (score_9, score_8_up, 1girl, solo, ...), not descriptive sentences; write it a paragraph the way you would for a photoreal model and it tends to default to whatever anime scene the words loosely evoke.
  • Its anime faces often read younger than the adults you describe. On several of our portrait and couple prompts the characters came out looking younger than the prompt implied. Tag adult ages explicitly and check every image with a person in it before you publish it.
  • No negative prompt, no LoRA slot, no image input. Unwanted elements have to be avoided entirely through wording rather than excluded, and you can't point it at a reference image or stack a custom LoRA on top of it the way you can on other checkpoints in this catalogue.

What the images look like

Our content-ladder frames aren't shown here; we report the results in prose. The gallery holds published, safe-for-work examples from the Prefect Pony XL model page.

A quiet character portrait. A man with short black hair reading by a café window in warm afternoon bokeh — plain tag prompting, no drama needed to hold the scene together.

Armour that survives a native size. A woman in ornate silver armour on castle ramparts at dawn, delivered at one of the seven trained SDXL sizes; off-ratio requests on this architecture are where faces and armour typically degrade, and the native shape avoids that.

Two figures in one frame. Two characters in red-and-white miko outfits sweeping leaves at an autumn shrine, showing the model can hold a small scene together, not just a single portrait.

A neon street portrait. A woman with silver twin tails on a rain-reflected city street at night — straightforward tag-based prompting producing a clean, on-genre result.

Prompts that worked

This checkpoint was trained on comma-separated tag strings, not prose. Start with the quality tags score_9, score_8_up, then list the subject, then wardrobe, then setting and lighting, in that order. Full sentences describing a photographic scene are the one thing to avoid — they're the prompts most likely to come back as something else entirely.

1. A character portrait, tag-first.

Weak: "A cozy cafe with a photograph-realistic man drinking coffee, shot on 35mm film." Full-sentence photographic prompts are the shape this checkpoint struggled with most in our tests. Strong: prompt 2 above — tags for quality, subject, wardrobe and setting, in that order, nothing written as a camera brief.

How far it goes

On 18 September 2026 we ran one probe each at L2 Partial, L3 Strong and L4 Intense; all three rendered as written. The page label is Uncensored: there's no maturity flag, no content-tier declaration and no separate endpoint — every prompt, ordinary or otherwise, runs the same way. We have only logged a single run per rung so far, and we have not yet tested L1 Suggestive or either L5 Extreme probe type on this family, so treat this as an early read rather than a full picture.

Separately from the graded ladder: on several of our portrait and couple prompts, this checkpoint drew anime faces that read younger than the adults we described, so we left those frames out of our arena. If you use it for character art, tag adult ages explicitly and review every output with a person in it.

Adults only, in every image you generate and publish. Never depict, or prompt for, anyone who could be read as a minor.

What the community says

The checkpoint this one is built on has one of the most direct reputations in the open-weight image world. A widely quoted Hacker News comment names it outright, calling it the NSFW anime version of SDXL, called "Pony Diffusion", and pointing to its download numbers on Civitai as proof. A separate comment makes the same point about the wider market: "well over half of your user base wants to generate hardcore NSFW" with an image model, whatever else it's capable of.

The complaint that matches our own results is architectural: one commenter, defending SDXL-based checkpoints for their LoRA ecosystem, still conceded up front that "SDXL is crap at composition". Civitai's own listing for Prefect Pony XL describes it as a merge built specifically to fix the base model's weak faces and eyes — an improvement on SDXL's anime output, not a fix for SDXL's underlying trouble following a full-sentence brief.

Put together, the community view and our test results agree on what this model is for: anime and NSFW character art, prompted the way the ecosystem prompts it, not a photoreal generalist.
