Seedream 4.0 is ByteDance's 2025 image model, still on sale at a flat $0.03 an image whatever size you ask for — from a small square up to 4096×2304, about 9.4 megapixels. In our 27 September arena run against 17 other families on the same 68 prompts, it turned in some of the cleanest, most consistent edits in the batch: outfit swaps, backgrounds and watercolor restyles all landed with the face, pose and framing intact.

The verdict

It's also uncensored on both endpoints, and mostly forgiving on our content ladder — suggestive and partial content rendered every time we tried it, fully revealing content almost always did, and only the L4 Intense rung came back softened on about a third of our runs. We haven't yet run it against our L5 Extreme probes. Pick it for big frames, multi-reference composites, and stills where flat pricing regardless of size matters; step up to Seedream 5.0 Pro when the brief is a portrait or beauty shot that needs to look shot on film rather than rendered.

Key facts

  • Content ladder: between 17 and 24 September 2026, L1 Suggestive and L2 Partial rendered on both endpoints every time; L3 Strong rendered in every run we logged; L4 Intense rendered in about two of three runs on each endpoint, with the rest coming back as a softer scene. We have not yet run L5 Extreme on this family.
  • Price: $0.03 per image, flat, on both text-to-image and the editor, at any of sixteen size presets up to 4096×2304.
  • Limits: one to ten reference images on the editor, no seed on either endpoint, one image per request.
  • Sources: every scored run is on the Seedream 4.0 test report, scoring rules on our review methodology page, full parameters on the Seedream 4.0 model page.

What we liked and what held it back

What we liked

  • Edits keep everything you didn't ask to change. An outfit-and-background swap came back, in our judges' words, a flawless edit: correct outfit, correct face, correct hair, correct street. A full watercolor restyle of a street photo kept every building, awning and bicycle exactly in place while genuinely repainting the medium.
  • Big canvas at the same flat price. The 4096×2304 preset — nearly four times the pixel count of a 1:1 frame — costs the same $0.03 as any smaller size, useful for a wide cinematic composition or a poster-scale still.
  • Diverse group scenes render candidly. Six people of different ages and ethnicities around a dinner table came back with natural laughter and every face visible, without the composition collapsing into repeated faces.
  • It obeys negative instructions. Told to build a living room with "absolutely no plants or flowers," it delivered a plant-free room — several other models in the same test batch added one anyway.
  • Ten reference images on one edit. Face from one photo, garment from a second, location from a third: our three-reference composite kept the coat's fabric and the streetlight's direction consistent across all three sources.

What held it back

  • It can take a word too literally. Asked for a croissant's "honeycomb" crumb structure, it drew actual small hexagons inside the pastry instead of the airy, irregular structure real lamination makes — a specific hallucination rather than a general blur.
  • Repeated text in headlines. Our Swiss-poster prompt came back with the word "OCT" printed twice; short single words are usually clean, but a design-heavy layout can still duplicate one.
  • Counting is inconsistent. It got our five-balloon count exactly right in one run and then miscounted a row of eight sushi pieces as six in another — there's no reliable pattern to when it counts correctly.
  • Anatomy strains under motion and crowds. A galloping horse came back with what judges counted as three front legs, and a two-player basketball rebound turned the players' sweat into what one judge called "a massive water splash."
  • No seed on either endpoint. Two identical prompts return two different results, so a repeatable series means editing your favourite frame rather than re-rolling text.

What the images look like

Our content-ladder frames aren't shown here; we report the results in prose. The gallery holds published, safe-for-work examples from the Seedream 4.0 model page.

A wide frame at full size. A company of riders unbuckling armour along a windswept cliff edge, shot at the widest 4096×2304 preset — the extra width is spent on the full line of figures rather than cropping in on one.

Window light, no gloss filter. A boudoir portrait with late-afternoon light raking across bare shoulders through sheer curtains, a soft honey-and-cream palette carrying the mood instead of a hard studio flash.

Move her, keep her. In our location-swap edit, a woman's face, body and pose are kept exactly as they were while the background changes to a sunlit Mediterranean terrace and the light is regraded to warm gold — a same-day companion to the temple-and-snow edits Seedream 4.0 is built for.

A costume swap, cel shading preserved. In our costume-restyle edit, the same face and pose carry a new outfit and a new crimson-and-gold set while the original illustration's shading and line weight hold steady, rather than resetting to a generic style.

Three sources, one street. Our coat-street-person composite pulls a woman from one photo, a coat from a second and a street from a third, matching the streetlight's direction through the coat's fabric so the result reads as a single photograph.

Prompts that worked

Seedream 4.0 rewards a prompt that names the shot's technical details — lens, palette, grain — alongside the subject, and it takes size seriously: pick your preset before writing, since the composition is built for that frame. On the editor, name what stays the same as often as what changes.

1. Window light with a named palette and lens.

text
Editorial boudoir photograph, an adult woman in an ivory silk slip sitting on the edge of an unmade linen bed, late-afternoon window light raking across her shoulders, sheer curtain glow, soft film grain, muted cream and honey palette, 50mm lens, shallow depth of field.

2. Wide-frame, subject placed off-centre.

text
Cinematic wide shot, an adult woman in a black leather trench coat leaning on a rooftop railing at night, a rain-hazed city of glowing windows and abstract neon light tubes stretching behind her, magenta and teal reflections on wet concrete, anamorphic lens flare, subject placed on the left third. No signs, no text, no lettering, no logos.

3. Keep the person, change the place (edit). Upload your photo, then paste this.

text
Keep this woman's face, body and pose exactly as they are. Move her to a sunlit Mediterranean terrace with whitewashed walls and bougainvillea, relight her with warm late-afternoon sun from the left, and regrade the whole frame to soft golden tones.

Weak: "Woman on a terrace." With no seed and a generic brief, every retry gives you a different woman and a different terrace — name the light, the walls, the plant and the palette instead. Strong: prompt 3 above, which locks the person and hands the model only the parts that should change.

How far it goes

Between 17 and 24 September 2026 we ran L1 Suggestive, L2 Partial, L3 Strong and L4 Intense on both endpoints. L1 and L2 rendered every time; L3 rendered in every run we logged; L4 Intense rendered in roughly two of three runs on each endpoint, with the remaining runs coming back as a plain, non-intimate version of the same scene rather than a refusal. The page label is Uncensored: we add no content filter of our own. The ladder for all three Seedream versions is compared in Is Seedream uncensored?

Not tested yet: both L5 Extreme probe types (L5a consensual adult restraint and impact play, and L5b cinematic gore) on this family; scenes with two women or two men above L1 Suggestive; a full ten-reference composite (we used three at most).

Adults only, in every image. A real, identifiable person needs to have consented, and you need the rights to every photo you edit.

What the community says

Seedream 4.0's reputation was made in its first weeks: one commenter wrote that Google's Nano Banana, announced only weeks earlier, had "already been upstaged in a lot of ways", pointing specifically at Seedream 4.0's higher output resolution. Another commenter, comparing it with later Seedream releases, still singled it out for "aesthetically pleasing generation".

The pushback is architectural, not aesthetic: one commenter argued that "Seedream and Qwen exhibit high frequency artifacts throughout their images", tracing it to the fixed patch sizes in their transformer and VAE. On Artificial Analysis's text-to-image arena, Seedream 4.0 still outranks both later Seedream releases — 4.5 and 5.0 Lite — a detail that matches the "5.0 Lite is a step back" complaint we've heard elsewhere.

Our own runs back the resolution and aesthetics praise directly: the 4096-pixel frame and the flat per-image price regardless of size are still real advantages two years on. The artifact complaint shows up for us mostly in busy, high-motion scenes rather than in the portrait and edit work Seedream 4.0 is usually bought for.
