Qwen Image 2 Review: Sharp Text, Uncensored, Weak on Logic

Pick Qwen Image 2 for uncensored stills needing exact wardrobe or bilingual lettering; skip it for logic scenes like clocks, counts and reflections.

Qwen Image 2 is Alibaba's closed-weight image model, priced at $0.035 an image on both text-to-image and its single-reference editor. In our 27 September arena run against 17 other image and edit models on the same 68 prompts, it was one of the few models that put a Swiss-style jazz poster's date, venue and headline on the page without a single wrong letter, and it was the one model in the batch that rendered fully bilingual Chinese-and-English neon signage cleanly.

The verdict

It is also uncensored: we ran every rung of our content ladder on both endpoints, and just one combination came back softened — two of three L4 Intense edits on the image-to-image endpoint, everything else rendered as written, extreme probes included. Pick it for portraits, product shots and edits that need a specific piece of wardrobe or a specific line of text; skip it for scenes built around a logic puzzle — clocks, mirrors, exact counts — where it fails as often as the rest of the field.

Key facts

  • Content ladder: on 25 September 2026, every rung from L1 Suggestive through both L5 Extreme probe types rendered on text-to-image; on the editor, only two of three L4 Intense edits came back softened, everything else rendered.
  • Price: $0.035 per image, flat, on both text-to-image and the editor. No batch field, one image per request.
  • Limits: one reference image on the editor (a second is rejected before the request runs), 800-character prompt cap, five aspect ratios on text-to-image and eight on the editor.
  • Sources: every scored run is on the Qwen Image 2 test report, scoring rules on our review methodology page, full parameters on the Qwen Image 2 model page.

What we liked and what held it back

What we liked

  • Lettering that actually spells the words you asked for. Our jazz-poster prompt ("LATE NIGHT JAZZ", "OCT 12", "BLUE ROOM") came back with every word correct and in a clean Swiss-grid layout; a coffee infographic's four step labels landed exactly as written too.
  • Clean bilingual signage, which most of the batch couldn't manage. A prompt asking for Chinese and English neon text side by side on the same sign came back legible in both scripts, where most of the other 17 families in the same run either garbled it or dropped one language.
  • Simple edits keep everything else intact. Asked to swap an outfit for a tailored suit while keeping the face, hair and street behind her, our judges called the result flawless: correct outfit, correct face, correct background, nothing else moved.
  • Sensual and couple scenes render as asked, not as a stock pose. A backlit rooftop portrait, a same-sex couple laughing in morning light, and a poolside campaign shot all came back matching the brief's wardrobe, lighting and framing.
  • It obeys negative instructions. Asked for a living room with "absolutely no plants or flowers," it delivered a plant-free room; several other models in the same run added a potted plant anyway.

What held it back

  • Counting and clocks trip it up, like most models we tested. Asked for a clock reading ten past two, it drew twelve past ten; asked for five balloons in two colours, it drew six; a hand meant to show three fingers showed four. This is not unique to Qwen Image 2 — nearly every family in our batch failed at least one of these — but it means you shouldn't lean on it for anything that needs an exact number rendered correctly.
  • Complex edits can move things you didn't ask about. A relight-and-redress edit correctly changed the outfit and lighting but also rebuilt the furniture and room layout without being asked; a snowfall edit added convincing snow but lost a window on the cabin.
  • It won't fully commit to a style transform. Asked to turn a street photo into a loose watercolor painting, it kept the scene photorealistic instead of repainting it — the one style-transfer prompt in our batch it plainly missed.
  • One reference image only on the editor. A second image URL is rejected before the request runs, so multi-reference composites (face from one photo, wardrobe from another) aren't possible on this endpoint.
  • No seed field on either endpoint. Two identical requests return two different people, so building a consistent series means editing your favourite frame rather than re-rolling text.

What the images look like

We don't publish our content-ladder frames; we report the results in prose. The gallery below holds safe-for-work examples from the Qwen Image 2 model page.

A neon bar, one lantern glow. A woman in a chocolate satin robe with a fox-tail accessory leans on a bar under red paper lanterns, a "MIDNIGHT FOX" sign glowing behind her — warm amber light and a teasing half-turn toward camera, exactly as asked.

A brass plate you can actually read. An art-deco hotel corridor at night, a woman leaning against a door with one heel dangling from her fingers; the brass "214" plate and the "DO NOT KNOCK" hanger both came out crisp and legible at a normal reading size, not just as a texture.

Lantern light for the summer festival. A man and a woman walk a step apart under paper lanterns at a night festival, fireworks blooming overhead — soft bloom and rich colour with nothing added or missing from the brief.

One reference, one new setting. In our single-reference edit, a woman and her satin robe are kept intact from the source photo and placed at a new neon-lit bar, the warm light matched onto her face and shoulders so the result reads as one photograph rather than a collage.

Words painted onto a blank sign. In our lettering edit, three new lines of menu text and a shop sign were added to blank surfaces in the source photo while everything else — the counter, the steam, the lanterns — stayed exactly where it was.

Prompts that worked

Qwen Image 2 reads plain English or Chinese prose rather than tags, and it rewards a prompt that names wardrobe, light source and lens in one pass. On the editor, name what each reference contributes and end with "change nothing else" if the rest of the frame matters.

1. Bar scene with a named light source.

text
Photorealistic cinematic still of a real adult woman in a dim neon cocktail bar at night, wearing a loose chocolate satin robe slipping off one shoulder, and a large fluffy orange-and-white faux fox tail accessory clipped at the small of her back, curving up behind her hip. She leans on the bar and glances back over her shoulder at the camera with a teasing half-smile. Red paper lanterns overhead, a neon sign on the back wall reading 'MIDNIGHT FOX', bottles bokeh, 35mm film grain, warm amber and crimson light.

2. Named signage, named lettering. This is the shape that gets you legible text: name the surface, quote the exact words, then say what must stay the same.

text
Photorealistic cinematic still, late night in an art-deco hotel corridor lit by dim brass wall sconces, patterned carpet and dark lacquered doors receding into a deep vignette. An adult woman leans back against one door with one shoulder to the frame, wearing a black lace-trimmed champagne silk slip with a fur-collared coat hanging open off her shoulders, bare legs, barefoot on the carpet, one black high heel dangling from a fingertip while the other lies kicked over on the carpet at her feet. She looks back down the empty corridor over her shoulder. On the door beside her head a polished brass plate reads '214', and a card hanger looped over the handle reads 'DO NOT KNOCK'. Warm amber light, 35mm, shallow focus, crisp evenly spaced legible lettering.

3. One reference, one new setting (edit). Upload your photo, then paste this.

text
Keep the woman and her satin robe from the image. Place her leaning on the bar of a narrow neon-lit cocktail lounge, and match the warm red lantern light onto her face and shoulders so it reads as one photograph.

Weak: "Wall clock showing ten past two." Qwen Image 2 reads "clock" and "numbers" but not the geometry of hour and minute hands, so the time is usually wrong. Strong: prompt 2 above — a fixed piece of text on a named surface, with a line telling it to keep everything else the same.

How far it goes

We ran every rung of our content ladder on both endpoints on 25 September 2026: L1 Suggestive, L2 Partial, L3 Strong, L4 Intense (an intimate scene between two adults) and both L5 Extreme probe types. On text-to-image, all of it rendered as written, extreme probes included. On the editor, L1 through L3 and both L5 Extreme probes rendered as written too — L4 Intense was the one rung where two of three edits came back as a plain, non-intimate portrait instead. The page label is Uncensored: we add no content filter of our own.

Not tested yet: L4 Intense on text-to-image beyond our three runs; multi-reference composites (the editor only accepts one source image); two-women or two-men scenes above L1 Suggestive.

Adults only, in every image. A real, identifiable person needs to have consented, and you need the rights to any photo you edit.

What the community says

Community sentiment on this specific version runs cooler than our own results. One commenter on the Qwen Image 2 launch thread wrote that "these generated 'realistic' images have a distinctly uncanny feel", and another called it "pretty meh in my opinion in realistic images" next to Google's Nano Banana Pro. On Artificial Analysis's text-to-image arena, the version we ran here sits well outside the top 50 among 163 listed models.

A separate complaint has nothing to do with image quality: Alibaba said it would open the weights and, months later, hadn't. One HN commenter noted it had "promised weights for Qwen Image 2 around 6 months ago" with nothing delivered — a contrast with the fully open license on Alibaba's own Qwen Image 2.1, released a few weeks after our test window closed.

Our own runs land closer to the middle: realism holds up well on posed portraits and product shots, the uncanny quality shows up mainly in busy action scenes (hands, crowds), and the lettering and bilingual-text strengths the community doesn't dwell on were the standout for us in a field of 18 models.
