Qwen Image 2 image editing from Alibaba takes exactly one reference image and an 800-character instruction. You pick the output's aspect ratio from eight shapes (default 1:1), as it does not follow the source's proportions.

Edit one photograph and choose the shape it comes back in

The Qwen Image 2 edit API takes exactly one reference image plus a written instruction and returns a single edited result. With no strength field, the instruction's wording alone decides how far the result moves from the source, and aspect_ratio sets the output frame independently of the source photograph's shape.

What the Qwen Image 2 API gives you

Prompts read in Chinese or English, with no language field

Prompts read in Chinese or English, with no language field

Both endpoints take the brief in either language without a flag to set, so a project drafted in one and reviewed in the other needs no translation hop. The 800-character ceiling is counted in characters, not tokens, and it is the same number on text-to-image and on editing.

The frame is fixed before generation starts

The frame is fixed before generation starts

aspect_ratio decides the output's proportions before the model draws anything, so a description written for a square composition has to be adjusted for a tall or wide one instead of cropped into it afterwards. Text-to-image offers five ratios; editing adds 3:2, 2:3 and 21:9 for eight.

  • Editing takes exactly one reference and rewrites it

image_urls holds one image and nothing more, so every edit is one photograph plus one instruction. The schema has no slider for how much of the original to keep, so the level of detail in the prompt is what separates a light retouch from a rebuild of the frame.

  • The edited frame does not inherit the source's shape

aspect_ratio on the editing endpoint defaults to 1:1 whatever you send in, and the field's own description states that it does not follow the source image. Leave it unset on a 3:4 portrait and the edit is recomposed as a square, so pass the ratio that matches your photograph when the shape matters.

  • One image per call, with an optional seed for comparisons

Neither endpoint has a batch or num_outputs field, so one request returns one image and a quote never multiplies inside a single call. seed is an optional integer from 0 to 2147483647: hold it steady across two calls to narrow the variation between them, though it does not guarantee an identical result.

Where Qwen Image 2 fits

  • Compose the whole layout inside one brief

    Posters and campaign visuals

Compose the whole layout inside one brief

Scene, wardrobe, light and lens fit in a single 800-character prompt, and any wording that belongs in the frame is quoted in that same prompt, since there is no separate text or layout field to put it in. Choose the ratio first: a tall poster and a square social frame are different compositions.

  • Restyle a label or surface without moving the shot

    Packaging and product mockups

Restyle a label or surface without moving the shot

The product photograph goes into image_urls, and the instruction names the finish, color or printed area to change while the counter, lighting and background are described as untouched. A tall bottle shot needs its ratio stated on the request, since the endpoint returns 1:1 unless told otherwise.

  • Combine several materials in one written brief

    Material and mood exploration

Combine several materials in one written brief

Text-to-image takes a single 800-character prompt, so naming fabric, surface and palette together in one description returns one image blending all three. This family has no multi-image merge: the editing endpoint accepts one reference, so the combination happens in the words.

  • Chain single-reference edits instead of stacking instructions

    Iterative photo edits

Chain single-reference edits instead of stacking instructions

Feed the previous result back into image_urls as the next call's one reference when a single instruction cannot cover every change. Each step keeps to one photograph and one written change, which is easier to review than a request trying to do everything at once.

How to work with the Qwen Image 2 API

  1. Settle the output shape before drafting the brief

The frame changes what a description means: the same scene reads differently tall and wide. Pick from five ratios on text-to-image or eight on editing, then write the composition to fit that shape.

  2. Spend the 800 characters on the whole scene

Subject, wardrobe, set, light and lens belong in one pass, with any on-image wording quoted exactly where it should appear. There is no second field for style, exclusions or layout, in either language.

  3. On edits, send one image and name what changes

image_urls takes exactly one photograph, and a second URL fails validation before anything is generated. Write what must stay identical first, then the single change you want made to it.

  4. Set aspect_ratio on edits when the source's shape matters

The editing endpoint defaults to 1:1 whatever you send in, so a tall or wide source needs its ratio stated explicitly or the result comes back square.

  5. Pin the seed once a draw is worth keeping

Leave it unset while exploring so every call is a fresh reading. Once a frame is close, fix that seed and change one field per call to see what moved.

Qwen Image 2 worked examples

  • A campaign visual written as one brief

Write the scene, wardrobe and light into a single 800-character prompt and pick a tall or wide ratio before generating. Quote any wording that has to appear in the frame inside the same prompt, since no separate text field exists.

Photorealistic editorial still of a woman in a deep green velvet coat standing on a rain-slicked city street at night, neon signs reflected in the wet asphalt, shallow depth of field, 35mm lens, cool blue and magenta lighting
  • A single-reference material swap

Send one product photo to the editing endpoint, name the surface or finish to change and describe the rest as protected. The output keeps the endpoint's 1:1 default unless a different ratio is set on the request.

Keep the bottle shape, cap and studio lighting unchanged; change only the surface finish from matte ceramic to brushed copper
  • Three materials in one text-to-image brief

Name fabric, surface and palette together in a single prompt instead of sending three references: this family's editing endpoint takes one image, so the combination has to happen in the words.

Flat-lay composition of raw silk fabric in deep burgundy, a slab of polished black marble and a scattering of brushed brass hardware, arranged together on a pale linen backdrop, soft overhead studio light

Qwen Image 2 API questions

Prompting Qwen Image 2

Decide the aspect ratio before writing, since the same description composes differently tall and wide, and spend the 800-character budget on subject, wardrobe, set, light and lens instead of a stack of adjectives. Quote any wording that has to appear in the frame exactly as it should read. On the editing endpoint, state what must stay identical before the single change you want, and set aspect_ratio yourself whenever the source's shape needs to carry over: it defaults to 1:1 either way.
