Wan 2.2 Animate takes two things — a still of a character and a clip of someone moving — and hands back the character doing the moving. image_url supplies who it is and what the scene looks like; video_url supplies every frame of motion; nothing else is required. Across 19 content-ladder runs between 15 and 25 September 2026, it rendered as asked on 17 of them and softened 2, one at L2 Partial and one at the L5 Extreme restraint-and-impact probe. It costs $0.053 per second at 480p and $0.11 at 720p, billed for the length of your driving clip.

The verdict

Our ladder runs from L1 Suggestive (lingerie, a slipping strap) through L2 Partial and L3 Strong to L4 Intense (an intimate scene between two adults) and L5 Extreme, split into two probe types: a restraint-and-impact scene between consenting adults, and cinematic gore. Wan 2.2 Animate rendered L1, L3 and L4 clean across every run, rendered L2 on 2 of 3 attempts, rendered the L5 gore probe on all 3 attempts, and rendered the L5 restraint probe on 3 of 4. Nothing was refused; the softened runs came back as ordinary motion transfer with the flagged element toned down rather than a blocked request.

Pick it for putting a character you already have — your own artwork, a photoreal portrait, a licensed asset — through choreography, fight blocking or a camera move you didn't shoot yourself. Skip it if you need the driving footage's set or wardrobe to survive the swap: in every run we saw, the character image wins that argument.

Key facts

  • Content ladder: 17 of 19 runs between 15 and 25 September rendered in full; one L2 Partial run and one L5 Extreme restraint run softened. No run was refused. Full breakdown in How far it goes below.
  • Scoring: see the score card on this page and the Wan 2.2 Animate test report for every run; scores are recalculated as we add hands-on votes.
  • Price: $0.053 per second at 480p, $0.11 at 720p. A 5-second clip runs $0.265 or $0.55.
  • Limits: one endpoint, one character image, one driving clip 2 to 30 seconds long; output length matches the driving clip.
  • Sources: the scoring rules are on our review methodology page, and the full parameter list is on the Wan 2.2 Animate model page.

What we liked and what held it back

What we liked

  • The character plate wins, every time we tested it. Hand it a studio grey backdrop and a candlelit bedroom driving clip, and the output keeps the bedroom, the candles and the wall — only the motion crosses over. That held across every example we checked.
  • It cleared four of five content-ladder rungs without a single softened run. L1 Suggestive, L3 Strong and L4 Intense all rendered 3 for 3, and the L5 Extreme gore probe rendered 3 for 3 as well.
  • Two fields, no prompt required. Three of our four sample runs sent only image_url, video_url and a resolution — no text at all — and the motion still carried over correctly.
  • Wide, full-body driving clips transfer the most. A medium-wide dancer with raised arms, a pivot and a side kick came across with all three beats intact, satin flares and gold trim on the character staying put through the movement.
  • Partner choreography with contact between two bodies still worked. A lifts-and-close-hold dance clip transferred onto a two-person cast without needing a special mode.
  • A short cast line is enough to steer a two-person scene. Naming who plays which role in one sentence was all the text our multi-person example needed.

What held it back

  • The driving clip's set does not travel. If you want the destination location to change, that has to live in your character image; the motion source's set, lighting and background are discarded in every run we saw.
  • One replace mode we have not tested. animation_mode also takes replace alongside the animate mode covered above; we have no runs to report on what it changes, so treat it as unverified until we test it.
  • L2 Partial softened once in three attempts. The rung between a slipping strap and the L3 Strong rung is the least consistent point on the ladder for this endpoint.
  • The L5 Extreme restraint-and-impact probe softened once in four attempts. Three of four consenting-adults restraint scenes rendered as written; the fourth came back toned down.
  • 720p roughly doubles the per-second price over 480p. $0.11 against $0.053 a second — a 10-second clip is $1.10 versus $0.53.
  • Output length is fixed to the driving clip. There's no independent duration field; a 20-second driving clip bills and renders 20 seconds, whatever length you actually wanted.

What we tested

We ran the content ladder across five rungs and two L5 probe types on the character-animation endpoint between 15 and 25 September 2026, 19 runs in total: L1 Suggestive 3 of 3 rendered, L2 Partial 2 of 3 rendered (1 softened), L3 Strong 3 of 3 rendered, L4 Intense 3 of 3 rendered, L5 Extreme restraint-and-impact 3 of 4 rendered (1 softened), L5 Extreme gore 3 of 3 rendered. Every softened run still returned a video; nothing in this set came back refused.

Outside the ladder, our four published examples show the same character-plate-wins pattern at both resolutions: a kitchen-shot driving clip landing on a grey studio backdrop, a neutral-studio driving clip landing in a candlelit bedroom, a medium-wide dancer's full routine carrying over intact, and a two-person partner dance with lifts and a close hold transferring without incident.

Prompts that worked

Most of what this endpoint needs is in the two URLs, not the words. Add a one-line cast note only when more than one person is on screen and you need to say who plays which role.

1. A published example: cast a two-person dance. No wardrobe or setting description needed — that comes from the character image.

text
Cast: one man and one woman. Transfer the motion of the supplied partner-dance clip onto the supplied character image: the lifts, the close hold and the turns carry over, the character and costume stay.

Run this on Wan 2.2 Animate →

2. No prompt at all. Three of our sample runs sent nothing but the two URLs and a resolution, and the motion still transferred; leave the prompt out unless you have more than one person to cast or a detail the images don't already settle.

Weak: describing the destination room in the prompt when you actually want the driving clip's set. The character image decides the set; describe the room there instead. Strong: a full-body, medium-wide driving clip — the widest movement we tested carried over every beat, arms, pivot and kick alike.

How far it goes

Wan 2.2 Animate rendered 17 of 19 content-ladder runs in full between 15 and 25 September 2026, with 2 softened and none refused. L1 Suggestive, L3 Strong and L4 Intense each rendered clean across every attempt; L2 Partial softened once in three tries; the L5 Extreme restraint-and-impact probe — a scene of consensual adult restraint and impact play — softened once in four tries, while the L5 Extreme cinematic-gore probe rendered clean 3 for 3. The page label is Uncensored: we add no content filter on our side.

Not tested yet: the replace animation mode; driving clips longer than the ones in our sample set; more than two people in one scene.

Every person in your character image and driving footage needs to be an adult, and you need the rights to both — see the note on likenesses below.

Alternatives

  • Swapping a whole figure into existing footage, keeping its set? Video Character Swap replaces the people you pick from a clip with your own reference photos and keeps the original set and camera move.
  • A general-purpose video model with its own motion? Wan 3.0 generates a scene from a text prompt rather than transferring motion from a clip you supply.
  • A pricier model with a longer single take? Seedance 2.5 runs takes up to 30 seconds from a text prompt, no driving clip needed.
