Image Upscaler Review: 2K to 8K, One Flat Price

Pick Image Upscaler to deliver a generated or shot image at a larger size for a flat price; don't expect it to rescue a blurry source.

Image Upscaler takes one image and returns a larger copy at the size tier you pick: 2k (about 4 megapixels), 4k (about 17, the default) or 8k (about 67). Composition, colours and the subject stay as sent, there's no prompt, and the aspect ratio always follows the source. It costs $0.012 per output image, and that price doesn't change between the three tiers.

The verdict

The job it does well is turning a smaller, already-sharp image into a larger file for a use case that demands more pixels — print, a large display, a close crop. It doesn't invent detail the source never had: compression artifacts, blur and noise scale up along with everything else, and very small text or a distant face may come back reconstructed rather than genuinely recovered.

Its natural place is the last step of a pipeline, not the first: generate or shoot at whatever size is fast and cheap, then upscale the one image you're actually going to publish or print. Sending a resolution tier smaller than the source scales the image down instead, which is a quick way to produce a smaller delivery file from one large source.

Key facts

  • Price: $0.012 per output image at any of the three tiers — 2K, 4K or 8K cost the same.
  • Input: image_url, resolution (2k, 4k default, or 8k), output_format (jpeg default, png or webp). No prompt.
  • Output: one image per request, roughly 4, 17 or 67 megapixels depending on the tier, aspect ratio matching the source.
  • Sources: the parameter list and the published example live on the Image Upscaler model page.

What we liked and what held it back

What we liked

  • One price across three tiers. 2K, 4K and 8K all cost $0.012, so picking a bigger tier for your use case doesn't cost more than picking a smaller one.
  • The published example shows the jump in numbers. A 1024×1536 studio packshot sent at the default 4k tier comes back at 3344×5017 — the label, the frosted glass and the light fall-off carry through at the larger size, since the source was already clean.
  • A tier smaller than the source works as a downscale. Asking for 2k on an image already larger than that scales it down, which is a plain way to produce a smaller delivery file without a separate resize step.
  • Aspect ratio is never a decision you make here. It always follows the source, so there's no ratio field to get wrong.
  • Output format on the way out. JPEG, PNG or WebP on output_format, so the result matches what the next step in a pipeline expects.

What held it back

  • It adds pixels, not information. Compression artifacts, blur and existing noise in the source scale up along with the parts that were already sharp. A soft or heavily compressed source stays soft at a larger size.
  • Small text and distant faces are reconstructed, not rescued. Fine detail that was never clearly resolved in the source may come back looking plausible rather than accurate — treat it as a guess filled in, not a recovery.
  • One image per request. There's no batch field; a set of images to upscale means one request per image.
  • 8K is a large file. About 67 megapixels is a substantial download and a slower generation than the other two tiers; reach for it only when the destination genuinely needs that many pixels.
  • It won't fix composition. This changes size only — cropping, straightening or removing something from the frame are separate tools, not settings here.

What the results look like

The model page's published example is a 1024×1536 studio packshot of a dropper bottle, upscaled at the default 4k tier. It comes back at 3344×5017 as a JPEG, with the label, the frosted glass and the soft light fall-off carried through from the source rather than smoothed away — the kind of clean, well-lit product photo this tool is built to enlarge. That result also illustrates the trade the tool makes: at roughly 3.3 times the linear size, a source that was already sharp stays sharp, because there was real detail there to scale up in the first place.

The general rule for judging a candidate source before you spend the request: if you'd call the small version sharp on your own screen, the tool has real information to work from. If the small version already looks soft or heavily compressed, upscaling changes its size, not its clarity.

Alternatives

  • Need the same treatment for a video clip instead of a still? Video Upscaler enlarges a clip to 720p, 1080p, 2K or 4K while keeping length, motion and audio.
  • Need the background gone before you enlarge? Background Remover cuts the subject onto a transparent PNG first, at the original size.
  • Need a wider or taller frame instead of a bigger one? Image Expander reframes a photo into a new aspect ratio rather than enlarging it.
