MiniMax H3 Max is the faster, more expensive build of MiniMax's H3 video model, and it is not the same model for uncensored work: it clears L1 Suggestive (lingerie, a slipping strap) and L2 Mature themes on both of its tasks, but from there image-to-video and text-to-video pull apart. In our 20–25 September 2026 runs, image-to-video kept going through L3 Strong, while text-to-video was refused or softened at that same rung in two of three tries. Both tasks came back short of L4 Intense every time. 5 seconds at 768p costs $0.40.

The verdict

What it does well has nothing to do with how far it goes on the content ladder. On our arena test set, MiniMax H3 Max carried a full emotional arc — worry, relief, a laugh with a hand clapped over the mouth — with the phone call and the kitchen staying put shot to shot, and its lip-synced dialogue clips came back near-flawless to our blind judges. It also drives generated sound by default: sizzling woks, a shattering wine glass and a strummed guitar all arrived with matching audio, not silence.

Pick it for a talking head, a short emotional beat or a fashion-film pan where the acting and the soundtrack matter more than how far the content ladder goes. Pick base MiniMax H3 instead for anything that needs to go past L3 Strong from a written prompt, or that needs a reference cast held across shots — H3 Max only takes a start frame and an optional end frame, with no reference-to-video task at all.

Key facts

  • Pass rate: on 20–25 Sep 2026, image-to-video rendered L1 Suggestive through L3 Strong in every run and our L5 Extreme gore probe every time; it was refused at L4 Intense and softened on our L5 Extreme restraint-and-impact probe. Text-to-video rendered L1 and L2, was refused or softened from L3 Strong up through L4 Intense, split on the restraint-and-impact probe, and rendered the gore probe every time.
  • Price: $0.05 per second at 480p, $0.08 at 768p; a 5-second clip is $0.25 or $0.40. There is no 2k tier.
  • Limits: 5 to 15 seconds per clip, an opening frame with an optional closing frame on image-to-video, six aspect ratios on text-to-video from 21:9 to 9:16, generated audio on by default. No reference-to-video task.
  • Sources: every scored run is in the MiniMax H3 Max test report, the scoring rules are on our review methodology page, and the full parameter list is on the MiniMax H3 Max model page.

What we liked and what held it back

What we liked

  • A full emotional arc, held together. Asked for a man on a phone call whose face moves from worry to relief to a laugh behind his hand, H3 Max delivered all three beats without losing the kitchen, his shirt or his face along the way.
  • Lip sync and delivery that our blind judges scored near the top. On short dialogue clips — a warm "I missed you so much," a laughing exchange at a cafe table — judges called the sync and the emotional read "incredibly natural" and "perfectly synced," repeatedly.
  • Sound by default, matched to the action. A wok toss, a shattering glass, a strummed guitar: every clip in our audio set came back with a soundtrack tied to what's on screen, not generic music laid over the top.
  • Water and skin that hold up close. A man rising out of a pool, wringing water from his hair, cupping his ears: the water sheeting off his skin and the wet-hair texture read as real footage rather than a smooth render.
  • A pinned ending, not just a pinned start. Give it both an opening and a closing frame and it plans the motion between them, so a clip cuts cleanly into an edit instead of stopping wherever the model feels like.

What held it back

  • The two tasks don't share a content ceiling. Image-to-video reached L3 Strong; text-to-video was pulled back a rung earlier on the same content. If a scene needs to go past L2 Mature themes and you're writing from a blank page rather than a still, expect it to come back softer or refused.
  • No reference-to-video. Base MiniMax H3 can hold a face and wardrobe across a shot using up to nine reference images. H3 Max only takes a start frame and an optional end frame — there's no way to cast a character from stills alone.
  • No native 2k. H3 Max tops out at 768p; base H3 goes to a native 2k tier for $0.058 a second. If resolution matters more than speed, this isn't the build for it.
  • It costs more than the model it's built from. 768p on H3 Max is $0.08 a second against $0.037 on base H3 — more than double — for a narrower content ceiling and a lower resolution ceiling.
  • Camera moves that need real perspective don't always land. Asked for a dolly zoom — the corridor stretching away while the subject's face stays the same size — our clip just showed a man walking down a static hallway with no perspective shift at all.
  • Judges flagged a jump cut on one physics test. A wine glass sliding off a table and shattering came back with the glass changing shape between the slide and the break in one of our clips; the same brief was clean in others.

What the clips look like

The gallery holds published, safe-for-work examples from the MiniMax H3 Max model page. Our content-ladder clips aren't shown; we report the results only.

An unbroken tilt. From an open grimoire up to a witch reclining in a high-backed chair, her robe slipping to the elbow as she turns a page — one continuous move with no cut, the kind of shot that tests whether the model can hold a composition across a full reveal.

Two pinned frames, eight seconds between them. A model in a liquid-silver gown walks the length of a marble corridor from a start frame to a chosen closing pose, the fabric catching rim light the whole way.

A period look, asked for by name. 1970s film halation, faded Kodak colour, a woman skating a slow lap of an empty roller rink under a mirror ball: the grain and colour cast came through as written, not as a generic "vintage" filter.

A wide anamorphic frame, written from nothing. A snow platform, a hand pressed to a train window from each side, breath fogging the glass between them: no source image, just text, at the widest of the six aspect ratios this endpoint offers.

Prompts that worked

H3 Max reads plain, literal wording well: name the people, the wardrobe, the one camera move, and the light, in that order, and it tends to deliver exactly that rather than reinterpreting the scene. For image-to-video, describe only what should move — the frame already carries who's in it and what they're wearing.

1. An unbroken tilt (image-to-video, 768p, 8 s). The prompt behind the grimoire clip above.

text
Start on the open grimoire, then tilt up to the witch reclining in the high-backed chair, her robe slipping to the elbow as she turns a page, sigil light from the book moving across her shoulder. Slow tilt, no cut. Cinematic, shallow depth of field, heavy film grain, sigil green in candle dark.

2. Named camera move, named light (text-to-video, 21:9, 5 s). The prompt behind the silver-corridor clip. No source image at all.

text
High-fashion campaign film. An adult model in a liquid-silver slip gown walks slowly toward camera down a black marble corridor, the fabric catching hard rim light and rippling with each step, hair moving in a wind machine, she stops and looks straight down the lens. Anamorphic 2.39:1, deep blacks, glossy specular highlights, low synth drone.

3. A period look, named by decade (text-to-video, 16:9, 5 s). The prompt behind the roller-rink clip.

text
1970s film look, heavy halation and faded Kodak colour. An adult woman in a metallic bronze halter jumpsuit skates a slow lap of an empty roller rink under a spinning mirror ball, hips swinging with the beat, then coasts backwards toward the camera with her arms spread wide and grins. Warm amber rink lights, thick film grain, slight gate weave, wide lens, disco reflections sliding over the floor.

Weak: "Woman walks down a hallway." No camera move named, no light, no wardrobe — H3 Max fills every gap itself. Strong: prompt 2. Camera move, light source and mood all named, nothing left to guess.

How far it goes

MiniMax H3 Max cleared L1 Suggestive and L2 Mature themes on both tasks in our 20–25 September 2026 runs. From there the two tasks diverge. Image-to-video reached L3 Strong in all three tries, then was refused at L4 Intense in all three; on our L5 Extreme restraint-and-impact probe it came back softened every time, and on our L5 Extreme gore probe it rendered every time. Text-to-video was refused or softened at L3 Strong in two of three tries, was refused or softened at L4 Intense across all four tries we ran, split three ways on the restraint-and-impact probe (one rendered, one refused, one softened), and rendered the gore probe every time. The page labels are Softened for image-to-video and Filtered for text-to-video: we add no content filter of our own beyond what each task's label describes.

Violence and the rest of the content ladder are graded separately here for a reason: H3 Max's ceiling on violent content is unrelated to its ceiling on the rest of the ladder, and the two moved in opposite directions in our results.

Not tested yet: L3 Strong or L4 Intense driven by a reference cast (there is no reference-to-video task to test); anime and illustrated styles on the ladder; scenes with two women or two men above L2 Mature themes; how the content ceiling behaves above 768p, since there's no higher tier to test it on.

Adults only, in every prompt, frame and output. Never depict a real, identifiable person without their consent.
