kling/avatar-2.0/talking-avatar takes a portrait (image_url) and an audio recording (audio_url) and returns a video of that person delivering the audio, at 720p or 1080p. There's no separate duration field — the clip runs as long as the audio does, up to roughly five minutes, and it's billed per second of that audio rather than per second of the rendered clip. A prompt field directs how the line is delivered — gesture, gaze, energy — separately from the words themselves, and the same pipeline handles a spoken line or a sung one.

The verdict

It costs $0.0512 a second at 720p and $0.1024 a second at 1080p. In our test, a 7.06-second voice track produced a 7.2-second clip and was billed for 7 seconds — length is rounded to the audio's whole seconds, not the slightly longer rendered output.

This is a narrow, purpose-built tool: one portrait, one speaker, one audio track in, a talking or singing video out. If you need a full scene built around that person — walking, gesturing with their whole body, changing location — this isn't that; it only animates the face and upper body speaking to camera.

How it scores. The Spicy Index and Freedom Score are shown on the score card on this page and are being recalculated with the runs described here; check the Kling Avatar 2.0 test report for the current numbers rather than a figure printed in this text.

Key facts

  • Price: $0.0512 a second at 720p and $0.1024 a second at 1080p, billed by the audio's length.
  • Limits: output runs as long as the audio, up to roughly five minutes; 720p or 1080p; one portrait, one speaker per call.
  • Content ladder: Kling reviews its own content; see "How far it goes" below.
  • Sources: the scoring rules are on our review methodology page, and the full parameter list is on the Kling Avatar 2.0 model page.

What we liked and what held it back

What we liked

  • Length tracks the audio exactly. There's no separate duration setting to guess at — trim the audio file to the length you want, and the clip matches it.
  • It sings as well as it speaks. Send a sung audio track the same way you'd send speech, and use prompt to direct the performance — gesture, gaze, energy — independently of the words.
  • Roughly five minutes in a single call. That's well past what's practical to script and stitch manually from shorter clips.
  • Billing follows the audio, rounded down. In our test, a clip that rendered slightly longer than its source audio (7.2 seconds from a 7.06-second track) was billed for the shorter, audio-based figure — 7 seconds.
  • The prompt reads as a delivery note, not a scene description. All four published examples are short instructions about tone and body language — "relaxed and wry, as if talking to an old friend," "confident and upbeat, like opening a show" — which is a genuinely different, and often easier, way to direct a performance than describing a shot.

What held it back

  • 1080p doubles the rate. At $0.1024 a second a five-minute clip costs about $30.72, against $15.36 at 720p, so draft at 720p and render the keeper at 1080p.
  • One portrait, one speaker per call. There's no field here for pointing at a specific speaker in a multi-person photo the way our separate Talking Avatar tool's mask_url does — send a single-subject portrait.
  • Moderation isn't perfectly consistent. In our testing, the same input was refused once and then rendered on an identical retry — a single refusal doesn't necessarily mean the request is off-limits, but it does mean you may need to try again.
  • No independent blind-vote leaderboard exists for this category yet. None of the three public video leaderboards we track carry a talking-avatar or lip-sync board, so there's no third-party ranking to check this endpoint against.
  • It's on Kling's filtered tier, like the rest of the Kling line — see "How far it goes" for what that means in practice.

What the results look like

The four published examples cover both resolutions and both aspect ratios the portrait can drive. At 1080p, a vertical portrait delivers a nervous, sincere confession with a glance down and a shy laugh at the end, timed word-for-word to the source audio. At 720p, one vertical portrait gives a warm, intimate stage address to a late-night audience with a hand resting on the microphone stand; two landscape portraits give an upbeat podcast-style cold open with matching eyebrow and smile animation, and a relaxed bar-counter story with small nods and an easy smile. Output orientation follows the portrait rather than being fixed to one shape, and in every example the facial performance — the specific gesture or expression named in the prompt — shows up on schedule with the audio rather than as generic mouth movement.

Prompts that worked

The prompt here directs performance, not scene content — the portrait and audio already decide what's on screen and what's said.

1. A specific emotional beat tied to a moment in the audio (1080p).

Settings that matter: use a portrait with a clear, mostly frontal face and good lighting — it's the single visual input the model gets, so its quality sets a ceiling on the output. Keep the audio clean, without background music or overlapping voices, since the model is matching lips and expression to a single vocal line, not separating a mix.

How far it goes

Kling reviews every request itself, in three layers — the prompt text, any uploaded image or audio, and the finished clip — the same approach across every Kling endpoint we've tested. Refused requests are never billed.

On 28 September 2026 we ran two rungs of our content ladder against this endpoint, at both 720p and 1080p. L1 Suggestive (lingerie, a slipping strap) rendered: a portrait in black lace lingerie came back talking as asked. On the 1080p tier the first try was refused after rendering and an identical retry passed, the same randomness we've seen on Kling 2.6 text-to-video, so one refusal at this level isn't always final. L3 Strong was refused at the upload stage within seconds on both tiers: an L3 portrait never gets past Kling's input check, and nothing is generated or billed. The page label is Filtered.

Not tested yet on this endpoint: L2 Partial, L4 Intense and L5 Extreme. Kling refused L2 on every other endpoint we ran, so don't plan on more here.

This endpoint exists to make a specific face say specific words, which carries real personal risk if that face and voice aren't yours to use. Only send a portrait and an audio recording that are your own, or that you have the explicit permission of the person shown and heard to use. A real, identifiable person needs to have consented before you animate them speaking or singing anything.

Alternatives

  • A cheaper, simpler way to animate a still portrait? Talking Avatar does the same portrait-plus-audio job from $0.018 a second, capped at 60 seconds, with a mask_url field for picking the speaker in a multi-person photo. Our Talking Avatar review.
  • Already have a video and just need it re-voiced? Lip Sync redraws the mouth on existing footage instead of animating a still portrait, at $0.012 a second.
  • Need the whole body to move, not just the head? Wan 2.2 Animate transfers full-body motion from a driving clip onto a character image.
