Krea 2 Medium Review: The Line's Least Filtered Tier

Pick Krea 2 Medium for the least-filtered tier on this line at $0.03; skip it for negative instructions or busy hand poses, both of which tripped it up.

Krea 2 Medium is the everyday, mid-priced tier of Krea's image line, and in our 16–25 September 2026 content-ladder runs it went further than either of its siblings: it reached L3 Strong in two of four tries and came back softened rather than refused on two more, while Krea 2 Large and Krea 2 Medium Turbo refused almost everything at that same rung. L1 Suggestive rendered outright; L2 Mature themes, oddly, came back refused every time — the ladder here isn't a straight line. One image at 1K, in any of five ratios, costs $0.03.

The verdict

On our wider 60-prompt arena set, Medium scored well on tight, single-subject compositions with clear light: a candlelit ballet barre, a still life of four distinct materials, a dragon curled on a stack of books. It struggled more with negative instructions and busy hand poses than its siblings did — asked for a living room with no plants at all, it added one anyway, and a piano close-up meant to show ten fingers came back with several fused together.

Pick it for everyday stills, including uncensored ones, at a price below Krea 2 Large. Skip it for negative constraints ("no X anywhere") or crowded hand-heavy scenes, and skip it if you specifically need L2 Mature themes, which came back refused outright in our tests.

Key facts

  • Pass rate: on our 16–25 Sep 2026 runs, L1 Suggestive rendered every time; L2 Mature themes was refused every time; L3 Strong rendered in half our tries and came back softened in the other half; L4 Intense and both L5 Extreme probes came back softened, not refused.
  • Price: $0.03 per image, flat across all five aspect ratios.
  • Limits: a 5,000-character prompt, five aspect ratios (no widescreen or anamorphic option), PNG by default or JPEG, no seed, no reference-image input, one image per request.
  • Sources: every scored run is in the Krea 2 Medium test report, the scoring rules are on our review methodology page, and the full parameter list is on the Krea 2 Medium model page.

What we liked and what held it back

What we liked

  • The most permissive tier on the Krea 2 line, by a wide margin. It reached L3 Strong or came close in every one of our tries at that rung, where Large and Medium Turbo mostly refused.
  • Single-subject scenes with named light score well. A ballet dancer lit by one candle flame in an otherwise Dutch-master-dark room, and a four-material still life under one softbox, both came back close to full marks from our blind judges.
  • Text mostly lands. A kraft-paper honey jar label with two lines of copy came back correct and legible in our test, scored a perfect 10 for text rendering by one judge.
  • Priced below Krea 2 Large. At $0.03 an image it undercuts Krea 2 Large by half, for output most of our judges rated close on general scene composition.
  • PNG by default. Useful for frames headed into a further crop or colour grade, where a lossy pass would show in fine detail like flour dust or rising steam.

What held it back

  • Negative instructions aren't reliable. Asked for a room with absolutely no plants or flowers, our test image included a potted plant anyway — the opposite of what Krea 2 Large did on the same kind of instruction.
  • Hands in close-up struggle. A ten-fingered piano close-up came back with fingers fused together on one hand in our test; a knitting close-up showed an unnaturally long index finger.
  • L2 Mature themes was the one rung it refused outright. The ladder here isn't linear: L1 and (partially) L3 came through, but L2 didn't in any of our tries.
  • Some skin looks softened rather than textured. A studio portrait meant to show dense freckles and visible pores came back with less texture than the brief asked for — a look some outside commenters have linked to the shared VAE across parts of the Krea 2 line.
  • No reference images, no seed. Krea 2 Large and Medium Turbo both take style references; Medium doesn't, and there's no way to pin a look across a series.
  • Only five aspect ratios, no anamorphic option. If you need 2.35:1 or a portrait ratio outside the standard five, use Large or Medium Turbo instead.

What the images look like

The gallery holds published, safe-for-work examples from the Krea 2 Medium model page. Our content-ladder frames aren't shown; we report those results in prose instead.

One candle, one dancer. A ballet dancer at a wooden barre lit only by a single candle flame, the rest of the room falling into a Dutch-master's near-black — the frame this page opens on.

Steam as the subject. A woman in a cedar bathtub with a pale fox mask floating in the rising steam behind her, the whole composition built around one horizontal waterline at the collarbone.

A door left ajar. An available-light shot seen through a half-open hotel-room door: a woman in an oversized sweater on the edge of a made bed, absorbed in her phone, lit by one bedside lamp.

Grain and downpour. A black-and-white 35mm frame of a fashion model in a soaked slip dress, arms flung wide in a torrential downpour on an empty crosswalk at night.

Prompts that worked

Krea 2 Medium takes the same wording style as the rest of the line: name the film stock, the single light source, and the material, then let the rest of the 5,000-character budget do the atmosphere. It responds better to one clear light decision than to a long list of qualities.

1. One light source, named directly. The prompt behind the candlelit ballet frame above.

text
Chiaroscuro oil-painting light, a single candle flame as the only source, Dutch master palette of deep umber and near-black with one warm amber pool of light, heavy falloff, visible dust motes. An adult ballet dancer stands at a wooden barre, one leg extended, shoulders and collarbone catching the only warm light in the frame.

2. A waterline as the compositional anchor. The prompt behind the bathhouse frame: everything above and below one horizontal line is treated differently.

text
Cinematic film still, old Japanese bathhouse. A woman lies back in a cedar tub with her head tipped against the rim and eyes closed, the waterline at her collarbone, wet hair plastered to her shoulder; a pale fox mask floats in the steam behind her, rising vapour catching warm lantern light.

3. Grain and a single weather condition, named plainly. The prompt behind the rain-crosswalk frame.

text
Black-and-white 35mm photograph, pushed grain, full-length. A tall adult fashion model stands in the middle of an empty city crosswalk in a torrential downpour at night, wearing a soaked black satin slip dress and heels, arms flung wide, head tipped back into the rain.

Weak: "Woman in a bathtub, relaxing." No light source, no single visual anchor. Strong: prompt 2 — one waterline, one light, one prop doing the mood.

How far it goes

Krea 2 Medium reached further up our content ladder than either sibling tier. Across 16–25 September 2026 runs, L1 Suggestive rendered every time; L2 Mature themes was refused every time, which is the one rung out of order on this tier; L3 Strong rendered in two of four tries and came back softened in the other two; L4 Intense, our L5 Extreme restraint-and-impact probe, and our L5 Extreme gore probe all came back softened rather than refused. The page label is Softened: expect L1–L3 content to come through at the lower rungs, with upper-rung content toned down rather than blocked outright.

Not tested yet: whether the L2 Mature themes refusal is consistent across more tries, since our sample there was small; anime and illustrated styles on the ladder; scenes with two women or two men above L1 Suggestive.

Adults only, in every prompt. Never depict a real, identifiable person without their consent.

What the community says

The Krea 2 line's most pointed criticism from outside is about how the base model was tuned. One commenter, discussing what Krea's own team calls "alignment training," argued it functions as "a code word for censorship/lobotomy" — a claim our own results complicate, since Medium reached L3 Strong more often than its siblings even as one specific rung, L2, was refused outright every time.

On image quality, a recurring complaint is softness: one commenter described output from this part of the line as "the same blurry, airbrushed output" as another model sharing a similar image decoder. Our own portrait test showed less skin texture than the brief called for, which lines up with that complaint, even as sharper single-light scenes like the candlelit barre came through with real material detail.
