Krea 2 Large Review: Cinematic Frames, a Filtered Ceiling

Pick Krea 2 Large for cinematic stills with real light and material; skip it for NSFW work, since it refused almost everything we asked.

Krea 2 Large is the model page's own description of the finishing-grade tier of Krea's image line, built to trade turnaround time for material and edge detail. In our 16–24 September 2026 content-ladder runs it refused almost everything above plain reference photography — L1 Suggestive, L2 Mature themes, L3 Strong and L4 Intense all came back refused, and only our cinematic gore probe rendered. On our wider 60-prompt arena set, it repeatedly produced convincing light and material, and just as often missed a literal instruction — a clock face, a balloon count, a brass ladder — that a plainer model got right. One image at 1K costs $0.06.

The verdict

On our 24 September salt-flat prompt, backlight traced a full silhouette through a shirt blown open by the wind, with dust hanging in the air exactly as asked; the same day's clock-face prompt came back showing 10:10 instead of the ten-past-two we wrote. That gap — excellent at atmosphere, unreliable at literal instructions — runs through the whole set.

Pick it for a portrait, a product shot or a film-still composite where mood and material carry the frame and a missed detail can be caught on a second try. Skip it for adult content, or for a job with a hard literal requirement — a clock reading a specific time, an exact prop count — since our tests show it treats those as suggestions.

Key facts

  • Pass rate: on our 16–24 Sep 2026 content-ladder runs, L1 through L4 came back refused; our cinematic gore probe rendered.
  • Price: $0.06 per image at every one of its eight aspect ratios, including the 2.35:1 anamorphic strip.
  • Limits: a 5,000-character prompt, up to 10 reference images for style only (not layout), no seed, one image per request.
  • Sources: every scored run is in the Krea 2 Large test report, the scoring rules are on our review methodology page, and the full parameter list is on the Krea 2 Large model page.

What we liked and what held it back

What we liked

  • Backlight and atmosphere that read as photographed. Our salt-flat prompt came back with a full silhouette traced by rim light and visible dust in the air; a night-time cinematic alley prompt landed pink and cyan reflections and an anamorphic lens flare, both scored close to full marks by our blind judges.
  • Negative instructions stick. Asked for a living room with no plants or flowers anywhere, it left the room bare — judges gave this one full marks on both counts.
  • Material distinctions hold up in one frame. A still life of velvet, brushed steel, frosted glass and raw oak in one shot kept each surface reading as a different material, which is a harder brief than it looks.
  • A full eight-ratio set, including anamorphic. Eight ratios including 2.35:1, staged for that shape rather than cropped into it afterwards — useful if the final frame needs to be a strip, not a crop.
  • Hand counts can land clean. A studio shot of two hands showing specific finger counts on a plain background came back exact and sharp in our test, though a piano close-up with all ten fingers in frame did not.

What held it back

  • It refused nearly everything on our content ladder. Suggestive, partial-level, strong-level and intimate-scene prompts all came back refused in our 16–24 September runs; only a cinematic violence probe got through. If uncensored output matters, this isn't the tier for it.
  • Literal instructions are unreliable. A clock asked to show a specific time came back showing a different one; a request for exactly five balloons in named colours delivered the count but with impossible physics in the strings; a sushi platter came back one piece short.
  • Crowded or active scenes strain its anatomy. Two basketball players contesting a rebound came back with a missing ball and distorted limbs in our test — the kind of busy, mid-action scene where it drops the most detail.
  • Text rendering is inconsistent. A neon-sign prompt came back with the headline text legible but a blotchy, unreadable mess where the reflection should be; other text prompts landed cleanly, so it isn't a hard no on lettering, just an unreliable one.
  • No seed and no reference layout control. Reference images steer palette, grain and light, not composition — you can't lock a pose or a layout across a series.
  • It trades speed for finishing detail. The model page describes it as built to spend time on material and edge detail rather than turnaround.

What the images look like

The gallery holds published, safe-for-work examples from the Krea 2 Large model page. Our content-ladder frames aren't shown; we report those results in prose instead.

Wind and light, one figure. A man alone on a cracked salt flat at sunrise, backlit into a full silhouette by rim light, dust hanging in a long lens compression — the frame this page opens on.

A single hard spot in a dark room. An opera-box scene lit by one raking theatrical spotlight, everything outside its throw falling to near-black, with one specular highlight doing the rest of the storytelling.

Refusing the rendered look, on purpose. A bathroom lit by one bare bulb, visible pores, water beads and film grain named directly in the prompt as the standard to hit, and the failure mode — a smoothed, "rendered" look — named as what to avoid.

Daylight as the counterweight. A midday swimwear shot with hard-edged shadows and a high-key exposure, set against the night-lit frames above it to show the same tier handling both ends of the lighting scale.

Prompts that worked

Krea 2 Large rewards concrete photographic language over quality adjectives: name the film stock, the lens, the light's source and direction, and the material, in that order, and spend the rest of the 5,000-character budget on what the frame should avoid rather than restating what it should look like.

1. Backlight and wind, written for an anamorphic frame. The prompt behind the salt-flat cover image, set to 2.35:1.

text
Cinematic film still, salt flat at sunrise, ultra-wide 2.35:1. A man stands alone on the cracked pan, shirt completely open and blown into two sails by the wind, backlit so the rim light traces his whole silhouette while the front stays in shadow, dust hanging in the air, long lens compression, minimal figure against a vast flat horizon.

2. Naming the failure mode to avoid. The prompt behind the bathroom-bulb frame: half the brief is spent ruling out a "rendered" look.

text
Unretouched editorial photograph, 35mm on colour negative, a dark bathroom at night lit by one bare warm bulb low and to the left, hard directional light with deep falloff into near black, real skin texture with visible pores and water beads, film grain, nothing airbrushed or smoothed.

3. Materials that must read as distinct. The still-life prompt that scored near the top of our arena set for holding four separate surfaces apart in one frame.

text
Still life of four objects side by side on a dark table under one softbox: a crumpled piece of red velvet, a brushed steel cup, a frosted glass sphere and a block of raw oak, every material clearly distinct, soft shadows, high fidelity texture.

Weak: "A moody portrait, cinematic lighting." Adjectives without a light source or direction give it nothing concrete to aim at. Strong: prompt 1 — film stock, lens behaviour, light direction and one thing to avoid, all named.

How far it goes

Krea 2 Large refused almost every rung of our content ladder. Across 16–24 September 2026 runs, L1 Suggestive, L2 Mature themes, L3 Strong and L4 Intense were all refused; our L5 Extreme restraint-and-impact probe was also refused. Only our L5 Extreme cinematic gore probe rendered, which has nothing to do with the rest of the content ladder. The page label is Filtered.

Not tested yet: anime and illustrated styles on the ladder; two-women or two-men scenes above what we ran; whether reference images change the refusal pattern (our ladder runs used text only).

Adults only, in every prompt. Never depict a real, identifiable person without their consent.

What the community says

Krea 2's launch drew unusually detailed technical praise: one commenter called the accompanying report "a massive technical report for an open weights image gen model". Independent benchmarking sites ranked the local, open-weight side of the line at the top of what runs on consumer hardware.

The pushback centres on two things unrelated to image quality. The licence requires a paid tier above a revenue threshold and mandates that any host add its own content filters, which one commenter summed up bluntly: "it's not open source". And against newer models that reason about composition and text, one commenter argued Krea 2 reads as "fighting the past war" — a criticism our own test set echoes in the clock face and balloon-string misses, even where the light and material are excellent.
