Apex API

callstack/apex/chat

Apex from Callstack supports React Native and React application development. This chat API accepts text / images, provides a 262,144-token input budget and accepts max_tokens up to 131,072. Stream Apex’s text as it arrives, or let a function-call result supply the evidence for the next step in React Native development with Apex.

REACT NATIVE CODING CHAT API

Apex API at a glance

A coding model trained for React Native, with a 262,144-token window and four reasoning levels on one chat call.

Input context
256K
262,144 tokens per request, enough for a screen, its navigation and the tests around it.
Reply ceiling
128K
max_tokens goes up to 131,072; the default is 4,096.
Reasoning levels
4
none, low, medium and xhigh, with medium as the default.
React Native evals
87.8%
Published by Callstack, against 88.6% for Claude Opus 5.5 on the same evals.

128
Function definitions the model can call, with parallel calls on by default.

Results

What Apex is good at

  • Specialist

Trained on how React Native is actually written

Callstack built Apex from React Native documentation, source code, public API symbols, libraries and discussions grounded in real repositories. That shows up in the work developers hand it: navigation setup, list performance, animations, native module wrappers and library upgrades, where a general model often reaches for a pattern from the wrong version.

  • Agent loop

Tool calls that fit a coding workflow

Send up to 128 function definitions and Apex can answer with a tool call instead of prose: read a file, run the tests, apply a patch. Your application runs the tool and returns the result as a tool message with the matching tool_call_id, so the model proposes and your code decides what executes.

  • Context

A whole feature in one request

With 262,144 tokens you can send a screen, its hooks, the navigator config, the related tests and the error log together. The model answers from the files you gave it rather than from a guess about how your project is laid out.

  • Thinking

Turn reasoning up only when the bug is hard

reasoning_effort lets you keep quick edits and explanations at none or low, and move to medium or xhigh for a bug that crosses several files. Reasoning tokens are counted inside max_tokens, so the cost of thinking stays visible in the usage you are billed for.

What to know before you run Apex

Chat
Apex is specialised. Callstack says frontier models still do better on broad general-knowledge tasks, so use it for React Native, React and Next.js work and pick a general model for everything else.
Chat
reasoning_effort accepts none, low, medium and xhigh. There is no high or max setting, and reasoning tokens count toward max_tokens, which is capped at 131,072.
Chat
Callstack lists text as the input type. The endpoint accepts image parts in a message, but image understanding is not something the publisher documents, so test it before you rely on it. Audio and video parts are not accepted.
Chat
Apex’s own content decisions still apply during React Native development with Apex; NSFW responses may change with the request or model version, so unrestricted output is not promised.

Use cases

What to build with the Apex API

  • Fix a slow list screen

Paste a FlatList screen with its renderItem, the data hook and a profiler note, and ask where re-renders come from. Apex is built for this kind of React Native question and can propose a focused patch with memoization, stable keys and item layout changes, which you review like any pull request.

  • Review a pull request

Send the diff plus the files it touches and ask for problems you can point to a line for: stale closures, missing effect cleanup, platform-specific code that only works on iOS. Ask for a ranked list so the first item is the one worth blocking on.

  • Upgrade a library or SDK

Give it the changelog excerpt and the files that use the old API, then ask for the changes in the order they should land. Callstack says the model is able to question wrong assumptions and sequence changes, which suits an upgrade with several steps.

  • Generate tests and Next.js code

Ask for component tests, a hook test or a Next.js route handler from the code you pasted. Callstack publishes Next.js results as well, so web React work is a supported use rather than an afterthought.

Prompts

Paste one into the playground as it is, then change one thing at a time.

  • Chat

    Investigate a concrete case

Review a React Native list screen for unnecessary renders and propose a focused patch. Work from the material I provide. Cite relevant evidence, distinguish facts from assumptions, and identify missing information before proposing changes.

Why it works. Use this evidence-based request to judge React Native development with Apex: check that Apex answers the stated question and separates supporting material from assumptions.

From $0.5 per million input tokens and $3 per million output tokens.

How to use the Apex API in three steps

  1. Step 1

Send the files, not a description

Put the relevant source in the messages with its file path above each block, then state the task and the platform versions at the end. A screen that works on one React Native version and breaks on another is far easier to fix when the package versions are in the prompt.

  2. Step 2

Pick a reasoning level for the job

Leave reasoning_effort on medium for most work. Use none or low for renames, small edits and explanations, and xhigh for a bug whose cause spans files. Raise max_tokens when you go up a level, since reasoning shares that budget with the visible answer.

  3. Step 3

Wire tools and continue the loop

Define your tools, let the model return a tool call, run it in your own code and send the output back as a tool message with the same tool_call_id. Keep the assistant message that made the call in the history so the next turn knows what happened.

Parameter reference and code samples are in the API and Readme tabs at the top of this page.

Why SpicyAPI

Why run Apex on SpicyAPI

  • No filter from us

We add no content filter of our own. What the model renders is what you get back.

  • Tested, not guessed

Content labels come from real generations we ran and checked, with the test date on the page.

  • Pay per result, in dollars

No subscription and no credits. Failed or timed-out tasks are usually not charged. Some models charge for content refusals as stated on their model page; check those billing terms before submitting.

  • One key for every model

One API key and balance cover image, video, audio and chat models, so you can explore more models from the same account.

About Apex

Apex is Callstack's answer to a narrow question: what if a coding model were trained on how React Native is really written? Released on 1 October 2026, it takes 262,144 tokens of context and replies of up to 131,072 tokens, with reasoning_effort at none, low, medium or xhigh and up to 128 tools per call. Callstack's own React Native evals put it within a point of Claude Opus 5.5, and the company is open that broad general-knowledge work still belongs to frontier models. The practical way to use it is as the default for React Native, React and Next.js tasks: send the files, set a reasoning level that matches the job and let your own code run the tools. Check the live price on this page, and test it on one of your real screens before you commit.
