Video Background Remover isolates the foreground of an existing clip and returns it on transparency or a solid colour. Send video_url and the defaults give you a transparent WebM VP9 file with the original audio kept. You can switch the background to black, white, gray, red, green, blue, yellow, cyan, magenta or orange, choose from nine export formats, and turn the original audio off. It costs $0.06 per input second, rounded up, for clips up to 60 seconds.

The verdict

It suits a clear case: a presenter over slides, a product clip for a catalogue layout, a short loop for a social edit. It does not generate a new scene, and there is no crop or output-size control. Keep background=transparent with webm_vp9 for compositing, because several export formats cannot carry transparency.

Key facts

  • Content ladder: not tested on this endpoint; it processes footage you supply.
  • Price: $0.06 per input second, billed on the clip you send; container, codec and colour do not change it.
  • Input: video_url (1 to 60 seconds), background (default transparent), output_format (default webm_vp9), keep_original_audio (default on).
  • Limits: transparency needs WebM VP9, MOV ProRes 4444, MKV VP9 or GIF; GIF has no sound.
  • Sources: the parameter list is on the Video Background Remover model page.

What we liked and what held it back

What we liked

  • The default request is the useful one. Transparent WebM with sound is what you get from one field.
  • Plenty of delivery choices. Eleven background options and nine export formats cover compositing, solid-colour plates and GIFs.
  • Audio can stay. keep_original_audio is on by default, so a speaker keeps their voice in the cutout.
  • Clear billing. Price follows input seconds, so a 10-second cutout is $0.60 whichever format you pick.
  • A real transparent master in our sample. The first test returned a 720×720 VP9 file flagged as carrying alpha.

What held it back

  • Not every format carries transparency. MP4 and the H.264 and H.265 MKV presets do not, MOV H.265 only partly, and an incompatible combination can be rejected. Pick a solid colour for those formats.
  • GIF is silent. Turn keep_original_audio off when you export GIF.
  • A file flagged as transparent is not proof of clean edges. Hair, motion blur, glass and reflective surfaces are the usual trouble spots; check the result over both a dark and a light backdrop, not only a checkerboard preview.
  • Browser support varies. Safari can drop the transparency from VP9 WebM, so test in the browser or editor where it will be used and keep the original file.
  • Sixty seconds is the limit. Long footage must be cut first.

What we tested

We have one real run, from 24 October 2026: a 5-second clip of a product-style subject on a light background, exported with the defaults. The result was a 720×720 WebM VP9 file with the alpha flag set, and the run was billed at the expected 5 seconds.

We did not score the edge quality, check how the result composites over light and dark backgrounds, test the other formats, or measure whether the audio matches the source. Those are the questions that decide whether it works for your clip, so run a short sample, place it over your real background and look at the edges frame by frame before you commit a full clip.

Alternatives

  • Cutting out a still photo? Background Remover returns a transparent PNG for one image.
  • Need to remove a fixed element instead of the whole backdrop? Video Eraser fills a masked region for the whole clip.
  • Want a bigger frame for the finished clip? Video Upscaler raises it to 720p, 1080p, 2K or 4K.

  • Cover image for Video Face Enhancer, not a model output: a cinematic still of a strip of 35mm film frames on a glowing light table, the same smiling face blurry on the left frames and sharp on the right, a technician's gloved fingers on the strip.

    Video Face Enhancer

Pick Video Face Enhancer to rescue soft or over-compressed footage of people; it fixes faces, not pixel count, and it can smooth skin a little.
