Softened — This model returns a result instead of an error, but requests beyond its own limits come back toned down. The call still succeeds and is still billed, so check the output rather than the status code.

FLUX 3 Klein Base Review: Unfiltered but Often Toned Down

Pick FLUX 3 Klein Base for repeatable seeds and full 50-step sampling at 1k or 2k; for stronger requests use the distilled FLUX 3 Klein, which toned down less.

FLUX 3 Klein Base is the undistilled build of Black Forest Labs' 5.6B open-weights FLUX 3 Image Klein, released on 15 October 2026. It is the checkpoint its makers publish for fine-tuning and research and run at 50 sampling steps, where the distilled Klein runs 16. SpicyAPI serves it as text-to-image and as an edit endpoint that takes one to three source images, at 1k or 2k, in 15 aspect ratios, with no content filter of our own.

The verdict

We tested it on 16 October 2026, with fictional adults only, and read every image. Nothing was refused. But a request that is not refused is not always delivered: Mild and Moderate came back as written, while most Strong requests, a Very strong request and a Maximum request were toned down, and one Strong edit came back as the unchanged source. In every comparison we ran, the distilled FLUX 3 Klein was the more willing model, and it is also the quicker and cheaper one.

So pick Base for what it is good at: the same seed returning the same pixels in text-to-image, so you can change one sentence at a time, and the checkpoint a Base-trained LoRA was made for. If you want to load your own LoRA, the sibling FLUX 3 Klein Base LoRA runs the same model. We did not run a blind quality test on Base, so no quality score is quoted here; the score card on this page shows the live Spicy Index and Freedom Score.

Key facts

  • Content limits: SpicyAPI adds no filter, and nothing was refused in our runs. The page label is softened: this build tones down the stronger requests on its own.
  • Text-to-image: prompt, aspect_ratio (15 options), resolution (1k or 2k), output_format (JPEG, PNG or WebP) and seed.
  • Edit: the same, plus image_urls with 1 to 3 source images named in the prompt as image 1, image 2 and image 3; aspect_ratio also offers auto, which keeps the first image's shape.
  • Not available: negative prompt, step or guidance controls, prompt expansion. One image per request.
  • Speed: a 1k image took about 14 to 45 seconds of model time, a 2k image about a minute and a 2k edit close to 90 seconds.
  • Price: per image by size tier, with every extra source image in an edit adding to it. The model page always shows the current price.

What we liked and what held it back

What we liked

  • No refusals and no filter. Nothing in our runs was blocked, and failed requests are not charged.
  • Repeatable seeds. In text-to-image, the same seed and inputs returned the same pixels in our tests, so comparisons are clean.
  • Full-length sampling. At 50 steps it is the build to use when you want to see what the model does without distillation.
  • Fifteen shapes at two sizes. From 3:1 panoramas to 1:3 phone strips at 1k, or about four megapixels at 2k.
  • Three-image edits that follow numbering. The published edit examples combine a portrait and a garment photo and keep the person.
  • The LoRA training base. Black Forest Labs recommends Base for training, so Base-trained LoRAs run on their own model here.

What held it back

  • It tones down more than the distilled Klein. Strong and above were often softened, and the Very strong and Maximum requests we ran were softened too.
  • It can hand the source back. One Strong edit returned the source image unchanged. That is a completed result and it is billed.
  • Slower and costlier. About two to three times the model time of the distilled build, and a higher price per image.
  • No negative prompt and no step or guidance control.
  • Three sources at most, where the distilled Klein takes ten.
  • Short prompts give flat pictures. This endpoint sends your prompt as written, so describe framing, subject, place and light yourself.

What the images look like

The gallery shows the six published examples from the FLUX 3 Klein Base model page: three text-to-image and three edits. They show clothed adults only.

Cold daylight and a warm stove. A sauna lounge portrait at 2k with a blade of daylight between pine boards, and a boathouse workshop at 4:5 in frost-blue light. Skin texture and fabric hold up at both sizes.

Two people, kept apart. A couple beside a wood stove in a cabin loft at 16:9. Giving each person a position and a direction to look keeps both faces clean.

Edits from references. A burgundy velvet dress from a product photo put on the woman from a portrait, and two single-photo restages that change clothes and place while the face and build stay.

Prompts that worked

Write a full scene caption in plain sentences: lens, framing, subject with an age, clothing, place, light and colour grade. For edits, give each source a role by number and say what must stay. Keep every person an adult.

1. Text-to-image, portrait. aspect_ratio 2:3, resolution 2k.

text
Cinematic photograph, 50mm lens at eye level. A Scandinavian woman in her early thirties with wet ash-blonde hair combed back sits on the upper pine bench of a dim sauna lounge in a loose white linen shirt dress, knees drawn up. A narrow blade of cold blue daylight falls between the pine boards across her face; the stove in the corner glows faint amber. Muted teal and honey grade, fine film grain.

2. Text-to-image, workshop. aspect_ratio 4:5, resolution 1k.

text
Editorial photograph, 35mm lens, slightly low angle. A Black man in his mid-thirties with a close-cropped beard stands at a workbench in a timber boathouse in deep winter, in a charcoal flannel shirt, planing a long wooden ski. Curls of pale shavings on the bench, oars on the plank wall, frost-blue light from the open doors. Cool steel-blue grade with warm wood tones.

3. Edit, garment from a second photo. Two sources in image_urls.

text
Dress the woman from image 1 in the burgundy velvet dress from image 2. Keep her face, dark wavy hair and build. Move her into a sauna changing room with pale spruce walls, leaning against the wall. Cold blue daylight from above, faint amber stove glow, cinematic photograph, 50mm lens.

Weak: "a woman in a sauna". Strong: prompt 1, with lens, light sources and grade written out.

How far it goes

SpicyAPI adds no content filter, and the page label is softened. We tested on 16 October 2026 with adult subjects only, over five intensity levels (Mild, Moderate, Strong, Very strong, Maximum; the test prompts are not published), and read every image. Results are reported as delivered, toned down or refused. Most levels got one to three runs, so these are observations, not rates.

LevelText-to-imageEdit

Moderatedelivereddelivered
Strongtoned down in two female-subject runs; delivered in one male-subject runtoned down in two runs, one of them returning the source unchanged
Very strongtoned down (1 run)toned down (1 run)
Maximumtoned down (1 of the 2 request types; the other was not run)not run
  • Refused: none, on either endpoint.
  • LoRA effect: a LoRA trained for FLUX.2 Klein loaded without an error and changed nothing, so a Strong request on the Base LoRA endpoint still came back toned down. We have not tested a purpose-trained unfiltered LoRA for FLUX 3 Klein, so we cannot say whether one lifts these limits.
  • Compared with the distilled build: the distilled FLUX 3 Klein delivered more of the same requests, including Strong edits.

Adults only, in every prompt and every source photo. Never upload a real person's likeness without consent, never depict anyone who could read as a minor, and keep your outputs private unless you have the right to share them.

Alternatives

  • Stronger requests? FLUX 3 Klein is the distilled build: quicker, cheaper, ten reference images, and it toned down less in our tests.
  • Your own LoRA on Base? FLUX 3 Klein Base LoRA runs this model with up to three LoRA files.
  • Your own LoRA on the quick build? FLUX 3 Klein LoRA.
  • Previous generation? FLUX.2 Klein 9B is the earlier open-weights Klein.
