Relight Review: Describe the Light, Keep the Photo

Relight takes a photo and a sentence about the light you want, and returns the same photo lit that way. People, pose and scene stay; light direction, colour and shadows change. It runs the Relight LoRA by dx8152 on Qwen-Image-Edit-2509, so the instruction is yours: name the source, direction, colour and hardness.

Key facts

  • Input: image_url (JPEG, PNG or WebP, up to 10 MB) and prompt; optional aspect_ratio, seed, output_format.
  • Output: one image per request.
  • Speed: our runs took 7 to 30 seconds, about 18 on average.
  • Price: flat per image; see the model page.

What we liked and what held it back

What we liked

  • Day to night works. A midday salt-flat photo became blue hour with the truck's headlights glowing, and a misty dawn shore became a golden sunset.
  • People and framing stay. In our runs faces, outfits, poses and framing held; light, colour grade and shadows moved.
  • The LoRA does something. With the same photo, prompt and seed, it gave harder, more directional light and window-pane patterns on the wall, where the base model made a softer change.
  • Plain-language control. "A single hard spotlight from directly above in a dark studio" is a valid request.

What held it back

  • It changes light, not content. Asking for a lamp or a window can add one; a window appeared for our sunset prompt, and where it goes is up to the model.
  • Hard shadows can survive. Existing harsh shadows can remain under the new light; run Shadow Remover first.
  • Subtle changes look alike. The base model can relight too, so very gentle requests may look similar either way.

What the results look like

The two published examples show the range: warm golden sunset through a window on the left, with window-frame shadows on a wall, and blue hour after sunset with the headlights switched on. Our extra runs also covered a golden rim light and a top-down spotlight; all four made the requested change and kept the scene.

Prompts that worked

1. Window light. From the published example.

Relight the image with warm golden sunset light coming through a window on the left, hard light with window-frame shadows.

2. Blue hour. From the published example.

text
Relight the image as blue hour just after sunset: cool blue sky light, the truck's headlights switched on and glowing warm.

Name the source, direction, colour and hardness; "make it moody" gives the model nothing to aim at.

How far the content goes

We tested Relight with AI-generated test images of a fictional adult at two content levels, the second being our toughest check for these tools. Both completed with no refusal and no replacement. It is a light-only tool, and in our runs it kept the image as it was.

Alternatives

  • Remove the light first? Shadow Remover flattens existing shadows, a clean base for Relight.
  • Different viewpoint rather than different light? Camera Angle Changer re-frames the shot.
